Gimme some telly advice

Alright folks of NSC, I wonder if you might be able to offer me some advice on buying myself a new HD TV.

The main telly in my lounge is, in fact, a big old CRT jobby and whilst it does the job I'm thinking it really is probably about time to upgrade and with prices coming down on LCD and plasmas all the time then surely it makes sense.

Now, first off I don't really understand the difference between LCD and Plasma and which I should be looking at. Currently I just get free channels through a satellite although I may get a HD capable satellite box in future HOWEVER I will be making use of crystal clear HD quality images with my PS3 and aside from all my games I might get some Blu Rays to give that a go too.

So basically I don't really need anything bigger than 32 inches and it doesn't need to be super flash, just pretty nice looking and hopefully future proof for a while.

Found this LG LCD on eBay which seems a good deal, especially as I've got a voucher for 10% off - LG 32LH2000 32" LCD TV HD Ready Freeview 1366x768 on eBay (end time 22-May-10 10:25:47 BST) - but is this a good buy or could I do better?

My good friends it's over to you. Any advice would be appreciated

I would go for LCD personally. This one looks quite nice 4 hdmi ports, built in freeview, 1080p for 319.99.

And why would that £320 Toshiba be better than the £250 LG on eBay?

Not criticising your choice, I just genuinely don't know what I should be looking for

An HD ready TV is not full HD and will give an inferior picture. Look for 1080 resolution - nothing less.

Plasma's can suffer from "burn in". For example if you watch sport and the score is displayed in the top corner for the game the image can sometimes be faintly seen as a ghost image after the programme has finished. LCD have a longer life span and are more energy efficient.

You have to drive to Manchester for the one on ebay, and richer sounds is in brighton plus you get a guarantee I think.

For a 32" get an LCD, not even sure you can get a Plasma less than 37"?

That said, i'd advise you to stop being a tart and get a min 37", anything less nowadays looks TINY and makes you look like a right cheapskate! Value for money wise (without being arsed to actually look) I would say get the best 37" LG plasma you can for your money and make sure you a MINIMUM 1080p with 200hz processor if you want to play PS3 and be remotely future proof!

What does the 200hz processor mean? Like in a computer?

With tv's the higher the hz, the quicker the refresh rate. So again with high paced sports programme a lower rate such as the typical 50hz in crt's would produced blurred images, but with 200hz blurring is almost eliminated.

Sony have a current deal where they'll take your old telly in part exchange for a shiny new Sony Bravia. Get £100-£150 off, depending on the size of TV you want to buy. Seems like a good deal, and saves you just dumping your old model despite it working perfectly well. Offer runs til July I think.

I've always liked the look of them Bravias. It would match my PS3

LCD's/ Plasmas have come RIGHT down in price over the last couple of years. They are a steal.
