What's it like?

I've just booked a trip between Christmas and New Year. Giving Swindon (a) am miss [bad fan]

Cadiz Seagull, I'm looking for a bit of local knowledge here, if you'd be so kind

Its like a big mountain next to the sea and Spain

There was a bin strike there about 25 years ago. They are still recovering. I hate the place with a passion, but I could be slightly biased as I have spent a night in the cells of the most corrupt police force in Europe every time I have been there. Nasty little coppers with porn star 'taches who all think they are SWAT, including the women.

Get over the border, or go to Morocco.

Went out and saw dolphins there in August. Had a horrible pub meal and whilst Spain was boiling hot, Gib was covered in foggy gloom (like it has been every time ive been there)

Bottle of Smirnoff £4 (litre)
Fags £10 - £15 for 200

That fog is quite famous.

I had a very weird holiday in a Spanish town called Tarifa just down the road.

I wouldn't recommend Tarifa by the way, except for the beaches which are amoungst the best in Europe - but....

1) The Town isn't much, and restaurants, hotels aren't great and not very clean.

2) I got food poisoning and ended up in hospital.

3) It's one of the windiest places in Europe, being the "windsurfing capital" of Europe. So bad that unless you are into being sandblasted you can't go anywhere near the beach on a windy day.

Back to the fog - it comes down the coast and comes to ground. I was sitting on the beach, lovely sunny day but all off a sudden visibility was down to a few metres.

However - I guess Gilbratar is a good base to explore some of the amazing towns down there inland.

Dirt cheap spirits, one went for a day trip and once we had done the taxi trip around the rock (which is much better than DIY up the cable car IMO) we had run out of things to do. Its like going back in time to the mid 70's.

What do you want to know?

The sort of place you should go to once to get an idea of its importance in history. Not a place I'd book a holiday in.

A bit like Eastbourne 30 years ago.

Definitely worth going up the Rock in the cable car and walking down and having a look in the tiny cemetery where the sailors from Trafalgar are buried but other than that, not much.

One day tops, for me. Sorry!

Righto Guys. Thanks for all the feedback. A million times more useful than the tourist blurb, if not exactly terribly encouraging. The reason for choosing Gib for my short break was that I wanted to see a bit of sunshine and take in somewhere I ain't been before. I am planning to include a trip into Spain and possibly Morrocco.

So it all hinges on the sun coming out really. Surely it'll be warmer than it was at Swindon last time we played them Christmas week!

It may or may not be sunny, Gibraltar has its own mini climate. probably more chance of sun in Morocco although fun and games getting through immigration there in Tangiers! If you go to Morroco by car go to Fez - fascinating place!

Some nice parts of Spain along the coast heading north from Gibraltar towards Cádiz - a beautiful city. The further up the coast you go the less windy.

Or you could go east along the Costa del Sol if that's your sort of thing.

Well I'm just back from The Rock and all the above info was useful;

Plane diverted to Malaga on the way out because of the Gibraltar weather - adding 3 hours to the journey.
Weather continued to be mostly wet - but was much warmer than Swindon.
New Year's Day was warm and sunny enough for laying by the pool with beers and a book - You'll thank me for not attaching pics of my lard arse.
Gibraltar is like Tunbridge Wells - but I quite like Tunbridge Wells.

Thanks for your help then,

Glad I came back early for the football. Cobblers!

Sorry, only reason to go there is for cheap booze and fags. The place is a complete dump and the people there are really up themselves. Best bet is to hop across the border to spain and drive up towards Marbella. 1000 times better - although its all down to personal opinions i guess....
