You know nothing about me, because I'm sensible enough not to put my every thought and action onto a football message board. The fact is, you constantly bitch and moan about life and nothing is ever your fault. If you spent as much time getting out there instead of posting utter drivel on NSC you might have the life you want.

I called you Rimmer as that is how you behave on NSC. Someone else called you bigoted and ill-informed but you seem to have let that go. Maybe because you know I'm right, and it's a bit close to the bone.

I had some sympathy with US previously and even offered to search my companies internal vacancies if he sent me his CV ....... but nothing. I've now come to the conclusion he likes being a morbid old goat.

London is a strange one for me.

The usual sights have scrubbed up well and it is quite exciting to see them, but the normal suburbia and some parts are pretty miserable.

However I note that many footballer many internationals and those that must have the run of some of the most glamorous places on the planet, always say how much they love London.

I am guessing they have a lifestyle in the capital that I have yet to sample.

US - chill the f*** out and do something positive - and why feel the need to update everyone on NSC about how shit everything is? This started as a conversation and debate about countries / places in Europe and has descended into another really negative slight on the state of the nation and the woeful lack of opportunity you personally see that living in this country provides you with.

I don't know what you do every day and you are trying to positively impact your situation - but you surely can see that striving to create negativity and personalise every single issue from horses, to films, to football, to cities in Europe does tend to lead people who do not know you to believe that you are a dreadful cynic and negative whiner.

You know the truth but please - to help avoid these binfests why carry on doing the same thing and then get surprised when the outcome is the same again and again and again and again and again.

Beautiful summer day today. One more example of where the sensationalist nonsense of the anti-Britain posters on this thread, was full of wrong.

"Shit weather".

No we don't - it just rains a bit. We have a very mild temperate climate with very little extreme weather. Your house is highly unlikely to get destroyed by a tornado. Your children are not going to die of waterborne diseases when half the country floods after monsoon rains. We won't all starve because of a seven year drought.

A really good English summer day is an utter joy.

I am guessing they have a lifestyle in the capital that I have yet to sample.

London, is grubby, crowded and full of *****.

However, I absolutely LOVE living here and lifestyle is definitely a big part of that. I wouldnt want to be on the bread line and living in London though

I don't think there's a city on the planet that doesn't have some shitty parts. Not one that I've been to anyway. I think a lot of people don't rate London just because it is so familiar. Yet if it was in another country and you went on holiday there, you would think it was fantastic. And to be perfectly honest, when I used to live in Brighton I thought the same, I wouldn't have said it was any better, in fact I would have said it was a worse city than Brighton. Having now lived in both for five years each I wouldn't put Brighton anywhere near it, and I wouldn't even consider moving back until I've reached the point of having kids. London is not a place to bring up kids, unless you can afford to send them to private school, in my opinion.

But getting back to the original point of the thread, I've decided that Ireland is the ghastliest country in Europe, that I have been to anyway. Although to be fair I think I've only been to the worst parts of it, everyone says the West coast etc is fantastic, but I'm yet to see it.

But getting back to the original point of the thread, I've decided that Ireland is the ghastliest country in Europe, that I have been to anyway. Although to be fair I think I've only been to the worst parts of it, everyone says the West coast etc is fantastic, but I'm yet to see it.

Outside of Dublin, which I can take or leave, Ireland (the Republic of) is a beautiful country. Bit expensive at the moment, but utterly lovely. Spectacular scenery, fabulous (empty) beaches, rich history and welcoming people.

Why do you say that? Which others are better and why?

Better cities in Europe: Barcelona, Rome, Milan, Bari & Amsterdam.
They may not be as big or offer as many options for tourists however they are beautiful cities with lower crime rates, better weather and a much friendlier and social atmosphere (in general).
Thats just my opinion of places I've visited in Europe anyway.

I won't get started on a list of better cities outside of Europe, I'm typing on my iPhone so it would take a long time!

Two things:

1) I can't actually think of any place I'd call ghastly, although Croydon has always struck me as somewhat grim even disregarding the Palace connection. I'm sure though that, like everywhere, it has good and bad bits.

2) US is rapidly becoming the biggest attention seeker on NSC.

I was simply making the point that whatever your objectives or reasons for posting you must surely see how they are hugely personalised with what what, to many, consistently seems to be a personal attack and blame culture on the difficult last few years.

The debate was around ghastly places in Europe - given sopme of the conditions that many people have to suffer it is difficult to give credence to your aggresive negative stance.

I agree. We have earthquakes but very small ones that don't kill people like they have in Italy & Greece.

So I've heard. I go over there a few times a year as I have loads of family there, but don't usually go more than a couple of hours from Dublin. But so far I'm not sure I've ever seen the sun shine there, it's always grey, drizzly and full of new streets with empty houses in that nobody is buying. And I really don't understand all the fuss about Dublin, there are at least 5 better cities in England than Dublin.

I kind of take your point, but you are looking at it solely with the view of a tourist visiting those places. There is far, far more to do in London than any of those cities. More sights to see, more bars and resataurants, more sport, more events, more history, etc etc. Those other cities may be more friendly and have better weather, so you may prefer to live there, but I don't think you can judge how good a city is on how friendly the people are and how good the weather is. Or London would be way down the list. London has far more to do and far more going for it than any of those cities you've listed. How many foreigners flock to the other places to live, compared to London? Not very many.

As for crime rates, I don't know the actual figures but I would disagree. Rome is full of pickpockets and bag snatchers, and so is Barcelona. Also, Bari?? I thought it was an absolute shit hole, it reminded me of a big version of Newhaven. Yes there is a problem with gun and knife crime in London, but the cast majority of that seems to happen between like minded people, rather than members of the public getting stabbed / shot. I would also honestly, hand on heart, say that I feel safer walking around London late at night than I do walking around Brighton. I think it's something to do with the small town mentality, but there doesn't seem to be the same chav pack mentality here that you get in smaller towns.

I think we're judging cities on different things, that's the issue. Sydney is a nice city, Rio is a gorgeous city, but after a few months you would run out of things to do, and end up going to the same places all the time, same as you do in Brighton. You will never run out of things to do in London.

I accept that London must be an international class city, especially if their sights and amenities are used regularly and you are close to them.

If you use the theatres, museums, gallery's etc, then it must be a unique place to live.

But again, if you move out of those very central places it seems to me, that even the nice high streets of suburbia that are very much part of London the town, offer no more than fast food outlets and the odd pub with hanging baskets outside, quite twee compared to Brighton.

Now Brighton for me is the place to live.

Firstly the sea, the bars, the compact cosmopolitan feel and the fresh and exciting people, the Laines of course that for me outplays Covent Garden every time.

In fact I must get there this weekend, when the weathers nice, no better place .......
