Trying to name your top 12 films is an almost impossible task so I've set a much easier one. Just name some German films that you've enjoyed. No top fives or top tens as you may have only ever seen one and liked it. So name as many or as few as you like. Mine include:

Mephisto
M
Fitzcarraldo (one of my favourite ever films)
The Tin Drum
Wings of Desire
The Lives of Others

Funny Games is excellent. The Hollywood balls up of a remake should not put you off.

Victoria, an amazing film in a single shot with a top soundtrack by Nils Frahm

As a teenager, there used to be some great ones late on Saturday nights on the channels our old satellite dish picked up...

Heimat - not strictly a film but was great - these days it would be called a box set and be on Netflix.

Downfall
Lives of Others
White Ribbon
Nosferatu
Tin Drum

For some reason, Rolf Harrris always came to mind.

Back on topic. remember a film about youngsters taking drugs. "Christiane F. Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo"

All of those - White Ribbon and Lives of Others are particularly good.

I'd add Goodbye Lenin
The American Friend (one of my absolute faves)
Marriage of Maria von Braun (indeed, all later Fassbinder are excellent)

and forget the great German silent films
Cabinet of Dr Caligari and, best of all, Metropolis

Hither (sometimes Thither)
Toni Erdmann, innit. Who would have thought a 3-hour German comedy would be both so funny and so moving.
Victoria was good too, from a couple of years back (apart from the piano-playing bit).

Also, enjoyed watching The Golem: How He Came Into the World - the enjoyment added to with a live piano performance over it.

Another vote for Das Boot here. Masterful suspense.

Not exactly a film, but Channel 4's Deutschland 83 of a couple of year's back was a Major (Tom) Must-Watch
