It's hardly something originating with lefties on NSC - the notion of the "shy Tory" is a long-standing and well-evidenced phenomenon in the world of political polling and the pollsters spend a lot of time, energy and money devising statistical methodologies to try and correct for it. It's also pretty well-established (and again not by lefties) that it does originate from some kind of embarrassment or shame at voting Tory, because rightly or wrongly (as a lefty, I tend to think rightly...) it's widely perceived as something that's driven by selfishness rather than a broader view of public or social benefit.

Well we all remember Thatcher's "No such thing as society" quote and like it or not it has left its mark

Who said that, and do you have evidence? Genuine question?

It's the view of the church she regularly attended.

http://metro.co.uk/2017/05/20/tory-candidate-linked-to-notorious-gay-cures-church-6650160/

And Angela Paterson, a former administrator at the church, also told the paper: ‘The thing that freaks me out was everybody praying that a demon would be cast out of me because I was gay.
‘Anything – drugs, alcohol or homosexuality, they thought you had a demon in you.’

Oh good you had me worried, the way you came across suggested that it was something she had said, thanks for your quick response!

Not much of choice is it? I can't recall a time with such a dearth of political talent and lack of inspirational vision in any party.

I have always voted, happily and decisively, but for the first time ever I am a total loss as to what to do.

Only 4 candidates standing in my constituency: Conservative, Labour, Lib Dem and UKIP.

Labour I discount immediately. I wouldn't be adverse to voting Labour under different circumstances, but I can't endorse Corbyn and McDonnell. Similarly, no way will I vote Lib Dem or UKIP. So that leaves the Conservatives.

Again, I wouldn't be adverse to voting Conservative - it is probably the natural home for my vote. But they have run an appalling campaign in a totally unnecessary election called purely for Mrs May's benefit and not the country's. Put simply, I don't believe they deserve my vote this time so why should I give it to them.

I can't NOT vote, so hence my being at a total loss. I still believe a 'spoilt' ballot 'is the best way I can register my complete exasperation with this whole sorry state of affairs. And for me, that is a crying shame.

Maybe I'll have a moment of clarity on my way to the polling station tomorrow morning and find myself able to make a positive choice, but time is running out...

Well, I've been and had my say.

I'm sorry to say there was no moment of clarity for me, so reluctantly I put a line through all of the candidates names and wrote, "None of you deserve my vote. Up your game next time."

This is the first time ever that I have spoilt my ballot paper but I still believe this says more about the pathetic choice put before the country than it does about me.

Very droll!

now, I'm saying this as a Christian, but if those were her direct words then her theology is a bit off- she's essentially saying that she's God which isn't on really

Adams spoke on behalf of the church at external events in 2009 and 2010, including one in which she said she had helped to heal a deaf man through prayer. Her husband was also reportedly listed a director of the church between 2010 and 2013.

The Brighton-based businesswoman also refused to confirm whether her Christian faith led her to believe in miracles, after it was reported that seven years ago she was involved in a ‘faith-healing’ incident.

A Christian woman who is standing to be the next Conservative MP in Hove and Portslade has claimed God used her to heal a man who was deaf in both ears through the power of prayer.

Kristy Adams, who was selected last month by the Tory's to run for the seat, said in a recording obtained by The Mirror that she laid her hands on a man's ears and said: "Be healed in Jesus' name."

Me thinks she is going to need a miracle [emoji3]

Most people don't vote Tory out of self interest, they do so because they believe the Tories will do a better job of running the country which will benefit the many. It's amazing how many people still don't get that.

Spot on! I have voted Conservative every election since I was old enough in 1974. I have practically no money but I have always believed that capitalism benefits the many not the few. It isn't about me, it's about making life better for the overwhelming majority of this country's people. Socialism destroys and Corbyn's socialism would destroy absolutely.

At least you lucky sods in B&H get a competition at election time.

In Worthing you could stick a blue rosette on an inanimate object and it would still win with a landslide.

I have lived at the same place in Worthing for the past 15 years. In all that time Bottomley has never once knocked on my door (or anybody else's that I know). In fact no member of the Tory party has ever come to my door at election time. I have never had any Tory election leaflets either. He knows he will get re-elected. He knows he doesn't have to do SFA to get elected. So SFA is all he does.

Shocking state of affairs that in 2017 it's like living in an 18th century Rotten Borough.

Excellent political analysis.:lol::lol:

In your opinion.

I'm not trying to say the choice is amazing, but why bother walking / driving to the polling station to scribble over the Ballot paper, can't really see the point personally. Still, you have made your point on NSC which is all important, good thread, 6 pages and no doubt more to come

These left-leaning people have no idea. The same thing happened in the last two elections and especially with 'leave' voters in the referendum. I heard a woman on a phone-in during that saying something like 'l will vote leave but I won't tell anyone as I'll just get called a racist or an idiot. I'm neither but I just want to be out of the EU without all the hassle that goes with being singled out'. When any Tory voter is being berated by the left for being anti children, oaps, disabled, NHS and pro money-grabbing big business and the ultra rich then it makes sense just to go vote and keep your head down. There is so much bitterness and hatred in the campaigning that I doubt that many Tory voters are going round with blue anything - let alone a rosette.

Thought this summed it up quite well IMG_20170608_190429.jpg

Not voting looks like you don't care. I care hugely and wanted to cast my single vote. None of the parties, in my view, have managed to offer a compelling vision of the future that I can get behind. This is my opportunity to say so. Sure, won't make much of a difference, but is still better than voting for something you don't believe in, or not bothering to vote at all.

Now that really would be stupid.

I really don't get it though. I've got two friends on my FB who are staunch Tory and very proud of it. One is an old school friend who I don't see so much but who works for a local Tory MP and is quite open with her allegiances and opinions. Another is one of my best mates, a bloke I can go out and get smashed with any time but who I also trust implicitly with many things including my family. He's got an "I'm voting Conservative" banner at the bottom of his FB profile pic right now. Buzzer is one of the most eloquent and interesting posters on this board when he puts his mind to it and an admitted and loud One Nation Tory.

People who've been on this thread regularly know I could never vote Tory but I certainly don't hate them. On the other hand I have been called (incorrectly) snowflake and lefttard by the right.

The Tories are in government. They have by far the most donations. They dominate the press. Buy The Sun and you're pretty much carrying round a Theresa May billboard (no need for a poster then). What's there to be scared of?

I can only think the shy ones really are embarrashamed. That says as much about them as the Tory party surely?

Good word - worth nicking myself .

If you think Socialists are angry have you seen the average feed of a UKIP supporter?

I remember a time when your vote, your income and your 'life' was a relatively private matter. Since the advent of social media it seems expected that you bare your soul, beliefs and anything else to the world on 'social media'. A lot of people think doing that is bizarre and act accordingly.
