If people can afford to buy 4x4 then they can afford to pay extra.

Im doing my bit by cycling but im about 1 person in a thousand that does this.

My work is only 3.5 miles away there is no point going in the car, however I know lots of people that travel the small distances to and from work.

The problem is that it's not actually going to solve the problem. It might encourage a few peple to change their car ( or at least think a bit more next time they buy one ) but most the people who can afford these cars will either live in houses with some sort of private parking or will live on the outskirts of London in the green a leafy suburbs such as Surrey.

I'm not entirely convinced it's a fair tax either - they could solve the problem over night by moving Road Fund Licence to petrol. That way people who have gas guzzlers would pay more anyway !!!

Also, has anyone noticed how all the ministers still get driven around in Jags etc ? Why don't they take the lead and switch to say Nissan Mirca's or Renault Clio's ( one built in this country and one designed here - Jags aren't British anymore so the arguement they've used in the past of supporting British industry is no long valid ). Something tells me most ministers ( of any political persuassion before I'm acussed of being a Labour basher ! ) would be less than happy to dent their own egos by changing.

I think that the important thing is that that the more schemes that there are like this the more it is likely to encorage manufacturers to start looking at producing more environmentally friendly vehicles. I mean there is no reason that I can see why all manufacturers could not produce a hybrid version of their cars.

I have a small engined car anyway but I would consider looking at getting an electric vehicle if the congestion charge is moved north to Kings Cross as these vehicles are exempt and I am (like most people) primarily motivated by money not the environment.

I also think anyone who lives in and around London and drives around during the 'school run' will more than welcome any moves that discourage the use of 4x4's in the capital!

Great news although it is another tax.

Why should people be so selfish and run these ego vehicles for a everyday use?

They must pay for the extra damage they cause just because they want to keep up with the jonesy and make their co*ks feel bigger!!
