Surprised it took that long. Another Premiershier club (when they were) would have sacked him after a few bad results.

I feel a bit sorry for him, but will never forgive GS for his penalty in '96. Although I did win a fiver that night from a chap in the year above. Never feckin' paid me though.

From Borough's chairman

"However, the time is right for change and that change has had to be made. Gareth will always be welcome at our football club. English football needs people of his stature and we feel certain that this experience will serve him well.

What a f***ing joke, GS did his very best and was building a good side I reckon. I would have him at the albion in a shot. Football is f***ed and I am sick off this shit. If he desrves the sack then RS should have walked a few weeks ago!

At least Boro won't force the new manager to use the same coaching and backroom staff.

Timing very odd. In some ways I wouldn't have been suprised to see him sacked sometime in the last few years, but to sack him now after sticking with him for all that time, when the club is finally winning again (albeit in a lower league) is strange.

Seems a bit cruel for him to go through last night's game as normal then sack him after a win...

The Boro chairman has always come across as the kind of chairman any right-minded fan would want at their club but this is a bit odd.

Southgate will get another managerial job, no probs.

I think Gibson is a very good chairman, he wanted a starting 11 who were born in the city, i think he had 7-8 sttart in one game?

Bizarre decision. One point off the top of the table, when anyone with any sense knows it's hard division to get out of

I think Gibson looks at the empty seats. And I don't blame him. I like Southgate - he is a decent man - but would I want him spending my money ? Plus his teams do not exactly set the pulse racing.

Southgate probably needed to start a bit further down the managership chain.

YOu have summed up my sentiments here. The fact is that Middlebrough went down, and then lost 3 home games on the spin without scoring a goal, the fans have turned and nobody is watching the team any more.

I think Gibson had to act and it's a shame because Southgate is a very likeable bloke.

That remains to be seen. Currently the only other person who has left as well is Alan Smith the football 'adviser'. The Coach (can't remember his name) is in temporary charge and he's described as a 'Boro stalwart', implying he's seen a few managers come and go. Be interesting to see if he keeps his job when the new man comes in.
