All this talk of snow made me think. Are we still allowed to have games in the snow??

Years back it seemed the norm to have one or two games on a snowy pitch with an orange ball, which was always great and a novelty. But when does that ever happen now, unless theres a blizzard during the game?

And whats your best memory of snow games? My starter, the FA Cup Replay against Peterborough, Dean Saunders with the winner

Crawley's game against Morcambe (I think) which was on Sky last season was played with an orange ball in driving snow.

Yep saw that on Sky, but wasn't that a case of the blizzard starting during or shortly before the game started.

If the pitch is covered in snow at the start they just never play it these days do they, even in crap leagues?

it depends on the referees decision as with every game. I think the deciding factor as to whether the game is played is if the pitch isnt too hard, and if the ref can see from one goal to the other.

In March 1970 it was so cold and frozen that the match was announced on the black and white television at lunchtime that the game was off, against Southport, I think in the old Division 3. I did not hear it as I had to leave before hand and TV was not too hot: well a bit too hot; if it was left on for more than an hour smoke started coming out the back).

I still remember with trepidation walking down to the railway station to go to the match (I went to every home game) thinking just how bloody cold it would be.

At the railway station, we were informed the game was of because fo snow and we were glad to go home (never heard of a home game postponed before).

Anyrate, the announcement was in error that the game was off and the game was played and the announcement sent to crowd down to 14,000 odd. The game before against Stockport County attracted a gate of 17,000 or so.

Historic note: Albion won 3-0 at the Hawthorns that season! Our first win there unless the historians know better?

Way out west
We had a home game postponed due to snow in about 87, think it may have been against Reading, I was living in North London and got as far as Victoria before I found out.

Found the answer in Tim Carder's history of the Albion.

23 March 1970: Brighton 1 (Gilliver) Stockport County 0. Att: 16,667. That win kept Albion top of the old Third Division.

The previous home game (11 Mar) was against Halifax Town, a 4-0 win (Gilliver scored a hat-trick), Att: 16,759. The game AFTER the Stockport game (27 Mar) was against Southport, where Kit Napier scored the only goal of the game. Att: 14,655.

The following home game to that was against Reading - a crowd of 32,036 saw Alan Duffy score twice in a 2-1 win, consolidating Albion's lead at the top.

Sadly, Albion lost four of the last five matches, and finished in 5th, behind champions Orient, then Luton Town, Bristol Rovers and Fulham. :(

And we didn't play at The Hawthorns that season. In fact, amazingly, the two Albions' first ever match against each other wasn't until September 1976.

Aha, where did we play against Walsall that season? Fellows Park was unfit. (I've been there. A bit like Withdean. There were covered stands but the rain came through the holes and we could hear the trains above the noise of the crowd.)

And the "whites" did not get promoted that year!

Bonus question:

What was the result when the Albion first played at Highbury?

The question that has not being asked:WHERE DO THEY KEEP THE ORANGE BALL ALL YEAR???
I'm old enough to remember 78,my first year away from the Albion
as I'd moved to the north east.
The worst winter since 1960 or something.
Never seen snow like it before or since.
How hard was it to find out if the local game at Sunderland was on?
Put the tv or radio every hour on the hour to find out what was happening or kept ringing the club.
No teletext or Internet of course.
Love watching football in the snow.
BRING IT ON!

It was the first game at Peterborough in the snow wasn't it......when a goal was scored after hitting a mound of snow and going over the keeper

I also remember Barry Lloyds first game at Sheffield United in the cup was a snowy game
