Last night, I went to see (From) The Jam at the Zodiac, in Oxford. As predicted, Paul Weller failed to show up. Performing with Rick Buckler and Bruce Foxton, then, was Russell Hastings, the lead singer of a band called the Paul Weller Council. He was superb. Five hundred Jam connoisseurs, Foxton and Buckler thought so. Last night's gig was the first of twenty-five gigs in the spring/summer tour to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the band's break-up. After a break, the tour resumes on 24th November and ends where The Jam played their last-ever gig, twenty-five years ago almost to the day, on December 21st, at the Brighton Centre. I urge anyone who loves The Jam to get a ticket. You will not be disappointed.
Last night, the following songs were performed.
The Gift
This Is The Modern World
To Be Someone
David Watts
Pretty Green
News Of The World
Boy About Town
Thick As Thieves
In The Crowd
In The City
When You're Young
Little Boy Soldiers
Smithers-Jones
So Sad About Us
That's Entertainment
'A' Bomb In Wardour Street
Butterfly Collector
Strange Town
Eton Rifles
Going Underground
Town Called Malice
Mr Clean
Down In The Tube Station At Midnight

Five-hundred fortysomething blokes (some women were present, but not many) sang, cheered, pogoed about the place and were made to feel sixteen again. I haven't had such a great night since we won at Palace.

Was he ever expected to?

No. He has never had any intention of going back. Quite right aswell, wouldn't be anywhere now as good if they reformed now.

I saw them as The Gift last year and they were excellent. Russell Hastings has a good voice but reforming The Jam is a f***ing joke and believe me there's no chance Weller will show up at any of these shows.

Paul Weller might just rescue his career by reforming The Jam.

His career hardly needs rescuing, whenever he does a tour its always sold out, if he releases an album it's always top 5, he's made for life!

I see The Jam without Weller in the same way as Queen without Mercury, Thin Lizzy without Lynott, or the Premiership without Brighton... all a bit pointless really.

To be fair tho, his non-Jam music is unlistenable.

no, sorry, missed the nail by miles. Foxton and Buckler together make an awesome sound. Hastings is very good on vocals. Seen The Gift 4 times now- and each time they get better. And listen to Weller doing Jam stuff- it ain't all that really.

Watch The Gift- now (from) The Jam, and be impressed. They sold out the May/ June gigs very quickly, and wont be suprised if they sell out the Centre (and yes, I hate the place- with a passion!)

Nonsense.

Whilst it would be great to see all of them back together, why deprive yourself of a great night out? I had the same attitude about the Stranglers, for 20 years refusing to go and see them without Hugh Cornwell. But then I went to see them without him, and guess what, I had a great time and would do it again in an instant.

Have tickets for December.
Agree with the adage of "Jam without Weller" etc. But I always thought "Floyd without Waters" and still enjoyed the concert.
Anyway...Roll on Earls Court---12th May---
