There’s actually a word for fear of Friday 13th - its ‘paraskevidekatriaphobia’

Does anyone have any superstitions, secret fears ? Not walking under ladders, black cats, the number 13 …personally, I’m just glad it’s Friday but then ….

No irrational fears myself, the weirdest one I have come across was with a big burly bloke I worked with, that was scared of buttons. He also lived in East London and his nightmare was bumping into a Pearly King.

I've moved on since the days of throwing stones at the moon and worshipping a sky fairy. I don't get the being scared to be alone in the dark, surely it's scarier when you feel you're not alone in the dark?
I walk under ladders, step on cracks in the pavement and don't worry if a black cat does or does not cross my path. I put new shoes on tables, cross on the stairs and any other of the medievil beliefs that surface I don't worry myself about.
Common sense ensues most of the time when you get to your mid sixties

I developed a phobia of lifts, so I've started taking steps to avoid them.

In my first role after leaving university I had the pleasure of working for an old-school manager of the highest calibre. He was absolutely excellent, and a fantastic mentor for someone raw and unsure.

He also had a long-held superstition about not working on Friday 13th.

In 1996, the company was in the process of being acquired, and it was a hectic and stressful time for all, especially my manager, as he was carrying a lot of weight on his shoulders.

Consequently, he couldn't take September 13th off as intended. He died of a heart attack in the early hours of Friday morning.

28 years later (to the day), I still miss him, and his kindness in the workplace was inspiring. I've followed the same approach, and I hope he would be proud of me.

TL;DR - man with long held superstition about Friday 13th ended up dying unexpectedly that day. Coincidence? Maybe.

I have a secret fear …but if I posted it here it wouldn’t be secret, so I can’t

I was brought up in a very superstitious household, so had to battle for a long time to ignore those fears. It’s very easy when life gets rough to blame ‘omens’ and even now I have to tell myself, it doesn’t matter what socks or shirt I wear to the Amex, it’s not going to affect the game or goals.

It's good that you've caught it early - left unchecked it can really escalate.

My father was deeply superstitious all of his life. He did it all, avoided walking under ladders, throwing spilt salt over his shoulder, refusing to pick up a dropped knife etc. We even had to cross our fingers if we saw a dalmatian and could only uncross them if we saw another type of dog. Therefore Friday 13th was a scary day for him, but he had to go to work. I can vividly remember him discussing with my mum how careful they needed to be on those days.

He died, aged 82. On Friday 13th January 2017. The irony.
