Fresh attempt to change UK time

The time changes to BST were done in World War One so that farmworkers could work longer into the evenings. What I want to know is that if we change for a 3 year trial period and it doesn't go ahead permanently what happens to the wages night shift workers lose at the changeover , will it be backdated ?

How will night shift workers lose wages?
Surely a night shift allowance is done on the actual attendance time not whether it is still light outside?

By why did that require the clocks to change, rather than their hours shift by one hour?

Northern Ireland changing to GMT+1 would lead to the situtation there was during the previous tests with train or bus journeys that took -55 minutes to cross the border..

NEW ATTEMPTS TO HARMONISE UK TIME WITH EUROPE.

Rueters: 16.10 Geneva

Plans have been announced today in the European Parliament that new pan European time is to be introduced into the United Kingdom.

Beginning in March 2008 the UK will harmonise it's traditional BST DST with the continent.

This will mean that German morning time will be adopted between 04.00 GMT and 09.45 GMT.
Britons will be urged to efficiently awake at 04.30am, perform some militaristic lovemaking climaxing with a deep "Oh Ja" some 30 seconds later, after a cold shower and rub with a wire brush a breakfast of Lager and pickled fish will be consumed between 4.45 and 5.00am prior to switching to French Time.

As French time begins, Britons will light a pungent cigarette whilst drinking coffee so strong it strips your teeth, retiring to the smallest room follows shortly for an extremley distressing bowel movement which may be accompanied by screaming.

At approximately 8.30 you will be expected to go on strike because you think that eating pond animals should be compulsory in England, you will block your road with burning sheep and blockade your nearest port.

On emerging at 09.00 from the restroom UK citizens will then consume a croissant and glass of brandy before the Italian Rush hour between 9.15 and 10.00am.

Italian rush hour will require a small underpowered motor scooter with a klaxon horn fitted as an extra, donning wrap around sunglasses and hair oil the country will head off for the relaxing trip to work.
This Journey should be conducted at approximately 80KPH and no quarter shall be given.
Unusually for the UK pavements and pedestrian precincts may be treated as simply extensions of the public Highway, and no opportunity to honk your horn and shout obscenities at women/men should be missed. On arrival in the office the UK will rswitch to Polish time between10.00 and 12.00.

During Polish time, you will be obliged to work more efficiently and cheaply than your colleagues, whilst they are loafing about having breaks, children, breakdowns etc. it is your duty to complete whatever work is on their desk quietly and to a high standard, then go to their boss and offer to work in their place for a pittance (N.B. You may have to sleep with 20 other people on Polish time in a cupboard)

At 12.00 There will be the introduction of Greek time.
It will be expected that older British women will grow a Stalinesque moustache, while the men will remove business attire in favour of distressing trousers and string vest, after an hour of shouting and casual theft Greek time will be replaced by Spanish time between 13.00 and 17.00.

During Spanish Time You will go home to bed for 4 hours.

The Hours between 17.00 and 22.00 will remain as BST (British Standard Time) where we willenjoy hours of reality TV, Porn on the Internet and Stella Artois, before Nordic time which commences at 22.00 and finishes at 22.30.

Nordic time will involve sitting in the dark drinking Vodka and listening to death metal until you pass out.

The hours between 22.30 and 04.00 are left to the discretion of the individual

When I worked at BT if you worked the night shift when the clocks went forward you still got paid for the 13 hour shift on basic but you lost out on an hours night allowance.

They wanted everybody to adopt the time change rather than isolate it to specific industries. It would be difficult changing shift times in one industry and not another , for example farmworkers changing and railwayworkers not.

When I worked at BT on the night shift, if you left the open-plan office just before midnight to go to the bog, the swipe-cards reinitialised themselves at 00:00 and you had to first find and then waken the security guard to get him to let you back into the office

Just think that if they introduced metric time you will have to work longer hours because instead of 24 there will only be ten. Minutes will last longer as well even though there will be 100 minutes to the metric hour.

The problem with the clock change is that we do it too soon, effectively diving into winter, and then come out of it too late and therefore miss some quality spring evening light.

Change it!
