My dad was a butcher and he told me never to keep eggs in the fridge! So I don't - I think if you use them up pretty quickly it shouldn't be a problem.

I have always wondered why when you buy a fridge it comes with the egg holders in the door? I never use them I always remove them and get rid of them and use the space for something else x

This, I think, is correct. Plus, the eggs' shell is porous so they absorb any smells of stuff stored next to them in the fridge - useful if you have truffles in your fridge though !

My mom (84, God bless her) told me as a child that we lot here sent eggs to you lot in the war, waxed but unrefrigerated, through U-boat infested waters, until the powdered-egg industry got up to speed.

Why would any one store eggs in the fridge,if you do that they are so cold that the shells crack when you boil them.Even supermarkets don`t store them in the fridges

Pour some vinegar in the water, then they won't crack.........guaranteed..

Pretty sure that the vinegar helps the white to coagulate IF the egg cracks.

Doesn't have any effect on whether the egg cracks or not ?

To ensure not cracking, you can make a pin hole (bear with me) in blunt end of the egg. To releases the air that sits in a pocket at that end.

It's that air expanding that usually causes the cracking.

So if I put all my eggs in one basket, it won't fit in the fridge and it's not a problem then?

I worry about some folk on this site!

Let me try to educate you regarding egg holding trays that are supplied with fridges...... They are supplied for your cadburys cream eggs innit?

this is also true. and that thin shells are down to lack of calcium.

We have a couple of chickens. The eggs never crack when boiled. fresh eggs should be ok for up to 3 months after being laid. the date stamp in supermarkets is mainly for reasons of not getting sued.

Something I never realised before having chickens is that yolk colour is effected by additives in their food, mostly paprika. a bright orange yolk is fake
