My family had free range chickens growing up, bloody annoying, could never find where they'd laid the eggs when I wanted them or I'd find some and think ... how long ago were these laid? Also they shat everywhere.

Can't say I noticed them cracking easier while boiling though.

They crack because you are going from the cold temp of the fridge to the hot temp of boiling water. Leave them out for a bit before cooking them or bring the water to boil with them in there already.

Nice.

For the record I didn't say that I won't buy free range because they crack. I always buy free range but sometimes the Mrs comes back with caged.
I was simply stating that in my opinion they seem to crack more.

Ok? Good

I don't keep my eggs in the fridge - I keep them in a rack in my kitchen and they never crack when I boil them?

Free range eggs are so much better than the crap they sell in the supermarkets - we have a small holding at the the back of our house and we get eggs off the woman there - the yolks are almost orange - and they taste superb.

Temperature is most of the issue. You'd not put a glass/Pyrex™ pot on a granite countertop, and for the same reason -- thermal shock.

Some small difference is due to calcium intake. A true free-range chicken won't necessarily get enough from the environment, if they're laying frequently. There's oystershells or some such in the made-up feeds.

(Don't have birds, but neighbors do... and this in a state where coyotes, pine martens, foxes, fishers, all make it...... shall we say 'interesting'.)

How do you like your eggs in the morning?

I don't put my eggs in the fridge, the supermarket store them on a shelf, so why do they need refrigeration? I keep them in the food cupboard (they crack occasionally)

This is becoming a theme. I think I'm minded to go and take all 12 eggs that I have in the fridge and just put them in the cupboard. I can see how the temperature thing could make a difference with cracking. Useful
