PRESS RELEASE: YOUNG SEAGULLS FLYING HIGH
Brighton & Hove Albion are proud to announce the launch of Young Seagulls, a pioneering new initiative to engage young fans and bring them closer to the club than ever before.
The Seagulls Club will be re-launched as a two-tier membership scheme, Gully's Gang for under-12s and Team Stripes for under-16s. The existing £15 membership fee is to be scrapped, meaning that for the first time ever, fans under the age of 16 can enjoy a variety of membership benefits absolutely free.
At the same time, Young Seagulls also heralds the creation of the Sussex Schools Partnership, whereby the club will join forces with 25 different schools across Sussex every year to deliver education and health initiatives, as well as football coaching. Each school will adopt a member of the first team squad, who will make regular visits and will provide a positive role model for the pupils.
Albion chairman Dick Knight said, "Young Seagulls is an important and exciting project designed to get young people across Sussex closer to the Albion. A significant sum is being invested into the scheme, and the club's relationship with young supporters will be bigger and better than ever before.
"The limitations at Withdean mean that we have lost a whole generation of fans since we left the Goldstone. It is vital that we start rebuilding our young fan base as we move towards the new stadium. This will be more than just football coaching. This is about helping young people fulfil their educational goals through the power of football."
Young Seagulls will be overseen by existing junior club co-ordinator Matt Hicks, while former Albion defender Paul Watson has been appointed as Young Seagulls Project Manager. Two other new employees, Sally-Anne Hayes and Ian Horner, will also be involved in the project - while Brian Hicks will continue to provide administrative support.
Knight added, "I'm delighted to welcome Paul Watson back to club in this new role. It shows that footballers have lots of other qualities, and I know Paul is looking forward to the challenge."
