Inspired by Bill Hader, I listened to two Zappa albums yesterday, Over-Night Success and Apostrophe(‘).

Looking at his discography, he seems to have released a million titles. Can anyone recommend something for today?

Other thoughts and comments welcome.

I think you mean Over-nite Sensation?

My favourite Zappa album, love this track particularly. Bloody weirdo :lolol:

I’d not really ever listened to him before but Steely Dan are just about my favourite band of the lot. And I can hear a lot of Zappa influence on their stuff, particularly from Hot Rats which, inspired by this thread, I’m listening to: it’s very musically sophisticated, which of course would appeal to Mssrs Fagen and Becker: psychedelic jazz rock, basically. Enjoyable.

We're only in it for the money - a fantastic attack on the whole SF/psychedelic scene. I also really like Uncle Meat, combining some of Zappa's humour and love of satire with some top class musicianship - that band could really play.

Rather incredibly, Bunk Gardner and Don Preston are still playing (at least, they were until recently) and they're both in their 90s now

Many years ago, i started collecting Zappa albums. When I got to 20 odd, he had got to about 50, and I decided he was going to win.

For something different

Saw him live a couple of times too and the musicians were truly incredible as was he.

And I love this :lolol:

This is a bit of a find - Frank and the band displaying their musical chops - a 25 minute version of the King Kong Variations

Imagine the BBC running an unedited version of a band playing one song for so long, it wouldn't happen now. I'd imagine the appearance of sex offender Roy Estrada would cause a few palpitations.

He had quite an interesting time hosting SNL, he was later banned from ever hosting again.

Is it an urban myth that he once ate his own shit on stage?

'Joe's Garage' and 'Weasels Ripped My Flesh'

Zappa was incredible. If one could listen to all his stuff I guarantee that there would be something amongst his oeuvre that you would think is absolutely fantastic. On the other hand I don't think anybody could like all of it. Even I find bits of Joe's Garage a bit tedious.

Didn't like the albums, but I saw him at The Brighton Centre circa 1979. Fantastic ! One of the most well rehearsed bands, featuring some of the finest musicians that I've ever seen.
I have 'Peaches en regalia' on my phone.

I used to love that thing he did live, where he would do a little jump and as his feet landed the whole band would instantly and perfectly go into something in a completely different genre, speed and time signature.

Corny, but very very impressive
