Forster - What are you doing, man?!

From The Argus

A few minutes later Forster was racing back inside his own half to dispossess Davis with a clean tackle before clearing upfield.

What the hell?! Why is he chasing back and defending? He's a striker damnit!

Disagree. Defending must start with the forward closing. A team who fights for each other, and all take collective responsibility for attacking, defending and creating. That's what we want isn't it.

Are you suggesting that even if fit, Murray would have been right to pull up on the halfway line as he did against Leeds, because he's a forward and shouldn't be chasing back?

It varies. Surely most should agree that to track back to the extent that Rooney tends to when he is frustrated is just stupid and pointless, as even if he does win the ball he is then totally out of position and thus not doing his job as a striker, pulling the defence around, creating space and trying to beat the offside trap.

I've got no problems with Murray not tracking back if it means he is in a position to create a goal scoring opportunity. No one ever complained about Zamora not tracking back (P.s. - If anyone did complain about Bobby, you're an idiot.)

Forster is a man with a footballing brain. Last night he was on the halfway-line for a Luton free-kick outside our box. He saw there was two Luton players lining up - and we had one player in the wall - so he ran back to make sure there was was no 2 on 1.

If this is the incident I recall, Forster lost possession in the Luton half with a bad touch, and took it upon himself to pursue the Luton player back into our half near the touchline, where he won the ball back with an impeccable sliding tackle (he then lumped it vaguely towards Jake and obviously it was cleared, but thats beside the point).

If all the players had Forsters attitude, then we'd get loads of bookings. Or something.

That's ok, I'm not embarrassed.

After the mass of threads over the weekend from people complaining that Murray didn't chase back with people oddly saying he didn't have to, I felt compelled to post this. I stand by my decision to do so, even if it is underappreciated. Greatness usually is...

Perhaps it would be more appreciated if the tone in which I'm saying that post in my head was clear in the reading of it...

I was there last night and watched the warm up. It was very interesting seeing Forster take a central role in the warm up / training. I would bet that he has more tactical and technical awareness than booker and white put together
