as the new editor of the London Evening Standard.

And he will continue as MP for Tatton, apparently.

Crikey :)

George Osborne has been named as the new editor of the London Evening Standard, the newspaper’s owner, Evgeny Lebedev, has said.

Lebedev, who also owns the Independent titles, said: “I am proud to have an editor of such substance, who reinforces The Standard’s standing and influence in London and whose political viewpoint – socially liberal and economically pragmatic – closely matches that of many of our readers.

“George is London through and through and I am confident he is the right person to build on the fantastic legacy of Sarah Sands.”

Isn't editor a full time job and by staying as an MP i would have thought that a conflict if interest would arise from time to time

Phew - a Russian owned newspaper edited by a former Tory Chancellor. At last, an unbiased opinion to replace those awful biased bods at the BBC.

What an absolutely ludicrous idea this is.

First off - he's an MP whose full-time job should be representing his constituents.
Second - editing a newspaper is a full-on job that demands all your time and readiness to react to breaking news 24/7. He can't give that.
Third - he has virtually no experience of journalism. It's a trade you need to learn.
Fourth - politicians cannot be news journalists. A proper journalist will not declare their political affiliations, will not accept honours because they have to be free to hold power to account. (Yes there are bad journalists, just as there are bad politicians - but that's what they should aim for).

This won't work but, more seriously, it damages honesty in public life.

I'm OUTRAGED. He still hasn't sorted out the wheelie bin problem at number 27 either.

I'm going to write a STERN letter to Cheshire Life magazine.

Was there any left?

Precious little. We have a US president who repeats opinions he's heard on Fox News as if they're fact. We've a Labour leader who makes up stories about not being able to find a seat on a train. We've a Government which hasn't a clue what to do about Brexit but won't admit it.

Proper journalism is the best way to shine on a light on all this bullshit and represent the public interest. That's why proper journalism is worth fighting for and why Lebedev/Osborne have just made it even less likely to survive.

A slap in the face to journalism at a time when jobs are being lost throughout the industry. It takes the concept of 'citizen journalism' to its ludicrous but inevitable conclusion - anyone can do it, no matter how unqualified and lacking in experience. Unless a few contributions to the Torygraph gossip column after being turned down for a place of the Times' graduate training scheme count.
