Forgotten Albion Centre Forward

We all called him the ''Black pig'' when we were kids............................ he was a looker though.

Made Andy Gray look a wuzz when he put his nut where others would never put their boot. I loved the man.

Remember him vs Bristol Rovers at Eastville in the early '70s absolutely terrifying their goalie with a shoulder charge (more like GBH really). 2-0 to us with AD scoring one of those characteristic diving bullet headers, followed up with a horizontal volley from just inside the box - all whilst carrying a pulled hamstring! Only then did he decide to go off (no doubt to the pub) - marvellous stuff.

I can count on one hand the amount of diving headers I have seen from Albion forwards this season. AD did 4 a game .

There were Pompey fans left. They were behind the away terrace, throwing stones at us. What a terrible day that was. As somebody else rightly points out, we were 1-0 up and getting quite excited, before Willie Young turned in the WORST 45 minutes I have ever seen anybody have in a Brighton shirt.

We were HUMILIATED that day. No bones about it.

what he said about that game. AWFUL.

Never really rated Alan Young to be honest, although I remember he scored a good winner for us away at Millwall that season.

Alex dawson became an early Albion hero for me too. He wasn't a bit like the young, slim, players but a throwback to a bygone age. he was 'stocky' and could head a ball harder than many could kick. he got in where it hurt....and it was always somebody else who finished up hurting!

Would love to see more pictures of him and his diving headers. i also remember his bouts with the young Phil Parkes of Walsall (QPR, WHU Ipswich)

Does anyone remember Alex playing against Gibraltar at the Goldstone in a pre season friendly.

6 - 0 if my memory still serves me....

My favourite recollection of him was in a night game against Reading that really should have been called off because of the blizzard. One of my first games I think. huddled up with my dad in the West Stand.

Guess what........... I think he scored with a diving header.

Yep.I remember both.

The Reading game, played in pouring rain (but we had a roof or three), I believe was his debut and it was the start of our climb up from 2nd bottom under new manager Freddie Goodwin. Dawson was an old Man Utd team mate of his and his 1st signing.

Nobby Lawton had Utd connections as well didn`t he ?

He was a good captain for us.

We were walking along Brighton see front when we saw the Gibraltar coach and one of our gang (we were aged from 10 to 14) did a V sign to their team. I remember one of their players reply and it was the first time I had ever seen the middle finger given. Not that we knew what it meant....... it was a continental thing in those days.

Alex stuffed them for us though.

No, its Alan Young!

Frank W is certainly not forgotten. Everyone remembers Frank. He was brilliant!

Certainly did, he came through the youth system at Old Trafford under Matt Busby.

Alex Dawson and Nobby Lawton also played for Preston NE in the 1964 FA Cup Final vs West Ham (together with a certain Howard Kendall). The lost 3-2 despite leading until the 87th minute, with Dawson scoring the second.

Ian "Spider" Mellor, although frustrating at times and a bizarre player to watch, he gelled with Peter Ward to provide a partnership made in heaven.

He used to get an unfair amount of stick. I always rated him, he was clever.Very rarely saw him on his arse.................. he was too smart for that malarkey.
