Can someone please explain why a footballer will move on the last day of the transfer window in a multi million pound deal and sign a 4 year contract all within a short period. Meanwhile, when renegotiating a contract, talks go on for months.

I would have thought that its very rare that it all happens on that last day, its more likely that it will all just get finalised then having only gone on that long due to, as Ali Jenkins says, money.

Either that or the player is desperate for the move.

I'm going to use Andy Carrol and Torres as an example. Two big money signings that happened at the last minute. There is no way Liverpool spent months negotiating with Carrol about tv money, shirt sponsorship or days off to see his Grandmother. Meanwhile at Arsenal the Walcott contract seems to be going on for ever.

I think the clubs who rush a deal through at the last minute will regularly have agreed to the sort of excessive terms that they wouldn't have agreed to so fast when renewing a deal.

Last day of the transfer window and the player holds all the cards. A club will almost always be more desperate for the signing than the player. Agents will use that to the nth degree.

Can't remember the player now, but it was a Leicester striker who they signed on January deadline day a couple of years ago, and he got a massive deal, far more than Leicester wanted to pay, but they were desperate and thought this player would catapult them to the Premiership by the end of that season, bringing in 10s of millions, so they went for it. A year later when they were trying to move him on, and no-one would touch him because of his wage, and he was happy to play out the rest of his 4 year deal on silly money, and it looked a ludicrous move.

Because clubs are desperate on the last day and sometimes it's a case of paying anything to get someone in. Earlier in the window, or between windows, they can sniff around other players, and make prospective targets wait. Last day and it's shit or bust.

It's a bit like that Seth Johnson story about him joining Leeds. Not sure if it is true but legend has it that when Leeds signed him, before the contract meeting his agent said ask for 20k, settle for 15k (he was on 5k at Derby). He got in there and the first offer from Leeds was 30k, to which he said it wasn't good enough so they ended up paying him about 35k a week

I heard it slightly different .... that as soon as they walked in a higher offer was put to him that he was looking for and they took it. Even funnier if they asked for even MORE.
