Now that is news to me? Been goal difference since 76/77. Never has been on goals scored as the second criteria for table position.

Yes, but the tables were shorter, and easier to read, than the present-day version -- they had to be, because the benefits of universal literacy and compulsory education were still in the future, that and there were no actual results in them. Plus the commentary on MoTD was delivered entirely by semaphore, by ratings supplied by the Royal Navy.
