I am looking to go on a tour of the Eastern states and Canada in June 2009 and the flight options are Delta or Continental. One goes to Newark and the other to JFK but can't remember.

Do any NSC travellers rate one over the other or are they both as good/bad as each other, plus is there any benefit in going to one or the other airports.

many thanks in advance

Never flown Continental but can cheerfully say that a Delta flight I took back from Atlanta was one of the worst ever.

The interior of the aircraft was like something out of a 70s disaster movie, the cabin crew were all about 50 and grumpy as hell, and there was one TV screen (no seat back TVs) in economy.

Never found much difference between Newark and JFK in terms of timings etc, but I am told getting to JFK in rush hour can be a bit of an ordeal.

I flew Continental to Newark the first time I went to NYC because they were the cheapest option, I have subsequently flown with them to NY twice more and LA once (and back each time, obviously), without a single delay or problem on any of the occasions.

I would have no problem whatsoever recommending them to others. The planes are good, the staff are friendly and the whole experience is professional and trouble free.

As for benefits of the airports, I've never been to JFK. Newark is in New Jersey, but does have a direct train connection to Penn Station in New York.

Agreed.

Flew Gatwick/Newark with Continental a couple of years ago, all very easy and no problems. The only downside was that we arrived late afternoon/early evening and so the journey by road into Manhattan from Newark was a bit slow.

Continental fly to Newark, but not to JFK.

Delta fly to JFK, but not Newark.

Personally I think CO is the better airline and Newark is my preferred airport, but it does depend somewhat on what your final destination. If you're going to Midtown Manhattan it is equally accessible (or otherwise depending on the traffic) from both. If you're headed for the Downtown area, then Newark is better.

Newark and CO is definitely better than JFK and Delta. Make sure you pay for flights with a credit card as US airlines are in real trouble and it's likely to get worse with the oil price and near US recession. So some airlines may go under but your credit card company should sort out any lost fares. CO may become part of an AA/BA/alliance.

Continental is the best (and independently best-rated) major US airline, and I use them for all domestic flights.

If you are a Virgin flying club member then give Continental your VS number and you will earn miles and points on the flight.

Avoid JFK like the plague, it is the worst airport in the continental USA.

We flew Continental to Newark. TV screens in the back of every seat with the choice of 200 films and all sorts of other programmes on their 777 range. Excellant service.

wherever the money is
Another option would be to fly Air Canada to Toronto. They are much better than Delta and more spacious and comfortable!!!!
Good luck whomever you choose to go with. I live about 5 hours drive from NYC so if you need any info on places in NY state then please feel free to ask :)

Was there really a need for a comment like that - i don't even mention football and you have a pop - what a complete dickhead

There's not a 'need' for most of the spiteful, agenda-based vitriol you hurl at DK at every opportunity you get on this board, doesn't stop you from doing it though.
