Taking it's inspiration from The Guardian here are my Five things we learnt from today's game(ok so maybe we knew some of them already)
1. Despite being very tall Brezovan is not very good a catching the ball. Peter continues to favour a continental style two fisted punch. Surely if you can punch it with two fist you can catch it?
2. The famous Anfield atmosphere is a myth. Fair enough the stand to right of us appeared to be full of tourists and a couple of vocal homophobes who missed the last three of Liverpools goals but the Kop only managed to rouse themselves after we had helped them to six goals.
3.Gus doesn't do damage limitation. At one point we had Noone and Lua Lua dovetailing down the left hand side. Five up front might have worked against Milwall but surely this is a tactic best saved for champ manager.
4. We are excellent at passing the ball to each other in our own half but lack penetration in the final third. This is not a direct quote from failed football manager John Barnes but is still a valid point. In contrast Liverpool moved the ball out to their wingers in three or four passes from their penalty box to the edge of ours. Without CMS on the pitch we had no ball over the top and as a result the Liverpool defence were able to hold a high line and squeeze the space in the midfield.
5.Although England internationals Downing and Caroll have been rubbish in the Premiership this season they are still too good for our defence. Caroll winged (as in winge) his way through the first half expertly before helping himself to a goal whilst Downing was rehabilitated by our fullbacks into remembering how to be a winger. Thank God we have Mattock and Reyes to come in.
Feel free to add your own insight on our humbling afternoon!
