Even in relatively recent years, I've seen deeply dispiriting performances from visiting West Indies or Subcontinent teams in early season test matches, against England teams less keen to press the matter than this one.
I've seen deeply dispiriting performances from England in recent years. We got bowled out for 70 by Ireland quite recently

Seriously though, if some of England's performances in India or Australia over the years had been by a less established test playing nation, they'd be refusing to play us ever again.
