My first Brighton away game - Bradford City, March (or April) 1972. This was when going to away games was the exception rather than the rule, except for nearby local derbies.

I've got to say the trip was a nightmare. My mate and I caught the supporters club coach from St.Peters Church at 7.00 a.m. on the Saturday. We seemed to be the youngest on the coach by some 30 years (we were about 19 at the time) and it felt like like we had joined the Sussex knitting circle it was that boring.

At last we made it to Bradford and straight into the local boozer where we drank about 7/8 pints of Bradford's finest. Onto Valley Parade where we saw Albion lose 2-1. A couple of things to note - it was our last defeat of the season as we then ended the season being promoted with Aston Villa. It was solid, dependable John Napier's last game that season (I think) to be replaced by Ian Goodwin.
We then picked up the reputation of being late goal specialists. I think that we scored in at least 12 matches, in the last 5 minutes, to secure either a win or a draw.

Anyway, back on to the coach for the thrilling journey back to Brighton arriving about 1 a.m. Sunday morning. :(

My mate and I were on that supporters club coach too and we were 17 !! He now sadly is deceased, he went before experiencing the AMEX. I agree though as to the general description of the coach members and your other detail. One could add though that Stuart Henderson was also dropped and replaced by Bert Murray who moved to right back from mid field. They were great management decisions at the time.

Got taken to plenty of away games as a youngster with my old man only to be left in a pub garden with random other kids whilst he did god knows what (Late Goldstone/Gillingham years). Couldn't say what my first one was and I doubt he could either.

First with just my mates though was a 1-1 draw at Orient. For a lot of them it was their first away game, they were amazed at the fact I jumped on the front wall (we were front row) and went mental. Monkey see monkey do. I remembered seeing my old man and his pals going mental at away games and thought it was the done thing. There's a picture of me celebrating on the front wall with thousands of Brighton fans going mental behind me, would love to see it. I can vividly remember the cameraman taking it.

Hull 2-0 Codner and Jasper 87 (I think) Maybe they scored? Billy Whitehurst was getting plenty of stick, I do remember that!

Nothing to do with other Albion fans either. Pompey fans had infiltrated the Dell's East stand ( to the left of the Albion fans behind the goal) and decided to take on Saints' finest.

Thanks for the explanation - I've always wondered why there were fans of ours in the stand and not behind the goal and thought it unlikely we would randomly be fighting the Saints mob, especially given our mutual dislike of Pompey.

Sin City
Charlton 0 - Brighton 4

Calderon, Lua Lua, Murray and Sparrow all netting.

What a day that was. Just about edges Donny at the first game at the AMEX as the best game I've gone to, and that's saying something.

That just happens to be the last away game I went to.

Peterborough - FA Cup 5th Round - 1985

Same for me.. We bought tickets outside the ground, after arriving a bit late.. Ended up with the Peterboro fans.. Looked like it might have kicked off had we won it.. I was only 11 at the time.....

Oops! Just saw someone mentioned the FA Cup semi final in 1983.. That was my first..... Although as it was a neutral venue, we were not the away team that day, maybe that is why it slipped my mind...

Crystal palace away march 78 0-0, in the old away end which is now sainsburys, plenty going on in all four stands didn't help two shakey 13 year olds when my mates dad clumped some bloke in front of us who was very drunk and hitting out at anyone , we asked him on way home in car was the drunk bloke Bha or palace said he didn't know or care

Same game for me. Don't remember much about it except that it was sunny and Vince Hillaire was really good.

Palace!!!! Peter Taylor (the original) when manager, won 1-0 with a very early goal from on loan striker Barry Butlin great memories the natives were not happy or was it the previous year when we got turned over 1-3 not too sure now but went to them both.

That was my girlfriend's first Albion game! As per usual the trek up the A23 was an absolute nightmare, we got into the ground five minutes after kick-off and, of course, missed the goal. Long story short - she was hooked and ended up going to as many Albion games as possible. We also ended up getting married and now have two daughters, and two grandchildren, ALL Albion fans! :albion2:
