Il have to say for me 85/86 season league game Fri night game at the odsall Bradford. Only 16, shady and dodgy as f*** outside ground. Stayed the night went out in bradford after game, in a strip joint and some bradford lads came all round us and said your coming with us and they made us feel like royalty, never brought a drink all night and they took us in clubs ending staying at a lads farm with all our head bags in tow. Went to man u v arsenal on Saturday with the bradford lad. There group of lads was part of a hooligan mob called the ointment, so we was lucky and got told we were brave staying in bradford after a game of theirs. A game that always will stick in my mind, don't even know if we won or lost.

Prior to this season I've only spent one away game 'overnight' and that was Burton Albion in 2017 and that was with my wife so I don't think that counts.

The problem with staying away is always 'what do you do with your stuff?'

It's generally the night before I've stayed. Shrewsbury in the mid 1980s I remember well, as we went up the night before and spent the night playing darts in the pubs. Checked out of the B&B in the morning, and turned up at the ground with our bags, including sets of darts - asking where we could store them. They just let us in with them.

Much like the time a couple of us went to Headington on the way back from a working holiday, and I had a billhook in my rucksack. Stewards looked at the first few muddy clothes - said 'is it all like this' - and just let us in!

In my experience, most B&Bs or hotels will hold your luggage until after the game. Not so much with Airbnbs.

My first overnighter was, I think, 1991, away to Middlesbrough. Drove to the game and then stayed overnight in Wakefield.

It wasn't an overnight stay but...
I graduated from uni in the summer of 1990. It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do next, so I was having job interviews from that autumn. One, in Loughborough, was on January 30 1991 - and after a draw at Anfield the previous weekend it was the day of the home FA Cup replay against Liverpool.
There was no way I was missing THAT game, and I was just able to make it by train in time - so I stood on the North Stand terraces in my usual position wearing a suit and with my briefcase between my legs.

I have had quite a few weekends away, taking in a game with Mrs Gwylan (and the previous Mrs G); I go to the game, while they go shopping. I've only had one overnighter with mates - the FA Cup match at Bolton in 92, when Paul McCarthy gave away a penalty towards the end.

We stayed in a cheap, ramshackle pub and my mate who was driving got absolutely ratarsed and was in no fit state to drive back until the Sunday. We had a lot of time to kill on the Sunday

My first overnight stay was in Newcastle before a match in 1990. We woke up after the evening out and the match had been postponed.

Ended up spending a mint just to watch Tottenham v Sunderland in London the following day.

Newcastle away between Christmas and New Year 2017 0-0 draw. Remember meeting a very strange woman on a night out with Andy (the other guy) who said to her that her hair looked nice, and she said that was the nicest thing someone had said to her that Year, it was December 30th… won £50 in a Casino and bought everyone premier inn breakfast, easier times.

Sunderland in the Championship when they were in a promotion season. Night out in Newcastle. Flew up, left our stuff at the airport storage as we couldn’t check in before the game. Met the team at the airport after the game and got some pictures with them.

Le Harve in a pre-season friendly. All of a sudden this woman started coming on really strong, at the bar I was warned she was €200 a night.

Well, not with my mates, but with the GF.

In the evening we had tickets to see Icon of Coil at The Corporation. GF was tired so I went on my own. Hotel was nice. Bosh!

Epic!
