Watching The Italian Job last night with a few mates we got to talking about British films and which is the best. We concluded that in fact the The Italian Job was top of the pile. The chase at the end with the Minis is marvellous and with quotes such as

'Right, away you go. Oh, and one more thing, just remember this. In this country they drive on the wrong side of the road... '

and of course,

'You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!!

the film is a piece of cinematic genius.

What are your favourites??

No idea if it was a British film, but if it was Withnail and I is my choice.

Trainspotting by a country mile. Next best is Withnail and I.

Although I've never seen 'The Italian Job' I can safely say, without fear of contradiction, that it's a pile of shite.:salute:

The Italian Job and Zulu are both top notch film.

Of the more recent stuff I thought Shallow Grave was an great movie.

You obviously haven't taken enough drugs in your time. I agree with you about 'Shallow Grave' though, and 'Brassed Off' from Mr Popkins above, Ewan Mcgregor theme there I think.

I have no doubt in my mind that the greatest British film ever made is Shadowlands, directed by Sir Dicky Attenborough, staring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger. Superbly directed and acted with tour de force career best performances by Winger and in particular Hopkins, far superior to Gandhi. Gandhi was good but overrated , did not deserve the 8 oscars it got. It won because of political correctness as it was felt they could not give the oscar to the far superior ET, that year as Gandhi missing out to a wrinkly Alien would have been un pc.

Not Newman, not Ince or Watson but Paul Schofield.

And a Brighton boy too. Went to Varndean (and it's Scofield).

I'd vote for Brighton Rock, not just because it's Brighton but because it's excellent.

Kind Hearts and Coronets next.

Dave

You are infact incorrect, Shadowlands is far superior to Gandhi, why ?, because I said so and I am never wrong.

Kind regards.

Of its genre - Dog Soldiers - a British film is very good indeed. It rocks.
