Having a bit of spare time after watching Potter's Chelsea keep up their current performances, and not that bothered about watching all the cup final as seeing Smug Eddie on screen and the general Newcastle love-in, irritates, thought I'd check out a new addition on Amazon Prime.

Die Hart features Kevin Hart (playing a fictionalised version of himself), Nathalie Emmanuel, John Travolta and Jean Reno, in a story finding Hart irritated at constantly being the comedy side-kick, and wanting to be an action film star. He goes off to Travolta's training centre to learn the techniques required, but Travolta's keenness at providing an authentic experience starts to take things in an unexpected direction for Hart...

A decent hour and a half romp, amusing, decent action, and good to see Travolta again in a film - can't remember last time I saw him in something. Emmanuel puts in another good performance, too. Reno is much more of a minor figure, occasionally cropping up rather than a more traditional role for him.

Cocaine Bear
(Loosely) Based on a true story of a drug dealer who dropped his supply in a national park and it was snorted by a Bear. This fictionalised story takes that premise and amps it up for a riot of a time. Bonkers and fun. The Ambulance/paramedic scene is brilliant cinema.

Wow - that's quick after the first one. Not that I'm complaining, as I thought the first one entertaining fare, and good to see Hart and Emmanuel teaming up again. One question - how does one get the Roku channel?

However, the roku channel is a free channel that comes with any roku device (it's like a firestick, I think it's one of the most popular streaming devices in America). Some programmes can be watched online, with an appropriate VPN.

Thanks - I've been thinking of getting a streaming stick so I can play Apple TV+ stuff on it without the ball ache of attaching my laptop to it each time. Looks like I might go for one with Roku as well as Apple TV+ then. I didn't realise they had their own channel/content until this morning. Obviously not doing too badly with their streaming devices then!

I went to see Marcel The Shell With Shoes On this morning. There were quite a few children in the screening, and they got. bit restless at times, but I think that is because they were too young for it rather than reflective of the quality of the film. It's an part animated faux-documentary (mockumentary seems too satirical to use with this). We hear the director of the documentary talking to the titular Marcel as he talks about his life. We learn that he has been separated from his family (except his grandmother) and they now live mostly alone in a house that became an airbnb when the previous owners split up. Lots of stuff about family/community, which has another layer when you know the actress voicing Marcel and the film's director (who also play's the documentary's director) were married to each other and divorced while/just before making the movie.

I really enjoyed it. Lots of whimsy early on and then some sadness and positivity.

Yup. Trying to post more trailers, partly to counter the idea of 'they only make marvel movies these days', partly just to expand the film thread. I'm not even sure how many of these will get UK theatrical releases.

Ahh, Marcell. I used to watch the short films with him a few years back. I thought they’d stopped doing it and then the feature pops up. I’m going to see it on Monday.
Yeah, can’t imagine it holding a child’s attention for very long. It has adult themes of loneliness, nostalgia and pathos.

Bit late with this one but I watched “Fall” (2022) last night on Netflix. Completely ridiculous popcorn flick, with some dire writing and insane leaps in logic.

Two implausibly attractive young women, one an irritating social media influencer, decide to climb an abandoned TV tower. Each decision they make is more idiotic than the last.

I normally love these types of movies (The Descent, 46 Degrees Below, et al); and it was just that. A movie of its type, hitting every single beat and listing off genre cliches almost mad-lib style. Errr, errr… love triangle! Erm… boobs! Oh god, we’re losing their attention… quick, throw in a Shymalan twist!

So many questions about this one.

Why didn’t they fly down the phone attached to the drone? It wouldn’t matter as messages don’t automatically resend on an iPhone, once failed you have to press to resend. So the idea was f***ed anyway.

Why exactly couldn’t they get cell phone signal anyway? If anything the signal should be the best they’ve ever had.

What the hell happened at the end? Becky had a necrotic leg, severely dehydrated and hallucinating due to starvation. An extended hospital stay, no? Possible amputation of the leg. She leaves the scene within minutes of rescue to go home with her Dad. They were still bodybagging her annoying mate! I bloody hate those scenes where everything is okay at the end and the damsel is sat in the back of an ambulance with a blanket, then is suddenly fine.

So many questions, a really stupid movie. Fun at times, but utterly pointless.

Aftersun.

Was okay. Not sure what all the fuss is about. It's fine.

It's finally been released here and it feels like one of those films where people either find it brilliant or a bit meh. Myself and my girlfriend came out very emotional and were mellow for the next couple of hours after it.

It is a film where quite a few people see themselves in it.

I did not enjoy it at all, and think your 5/10 is very generous. From the '51 weeks later' after the initial opening scene and then doing nothing with the fact it was an anniversary. The predictability of the hallucination, the lack of physics (a single screw held it all in place? Climbing the ladder they could hear each other perfectly fine, step onto a platform and the wind is too loud to hear each other despite the fact it was an open frame they were climbing in

But then I went to the cinema to watch it. Perhaps I'd've been a bit more forgiving if I watched it at home.
