From past experience how did the ASLEF strikes affect Southern ? Partial service from West Coastway or none ?

After the last overtime ban , southern didn’t run a service after 20:00 on the Saturday as we were up O2 seeing Peter Kay , south eastern where fine so had to go London Bridge to wadhurst where we parked to get back to Eastbourne

Doesn’t really matter. I used to travel by train every now and again but I don’t even factor it in as a possibility anymore because of this nonsense.

It’s an overtime ban , if the train companies actually recruited enough train drivers you would not notice any difference , but as they run a service with not enough staff they rely on drivers to work extra rest days to cover shifts .TBH After 7 days on the trot getting up at 2am for early turns and still getting enough sleep to concentrate for 2 1/2hrs to 5hrs at a time so you don’t kill thousands of people it’s nice to actually have a rest day off and be able to have a drink relax and spend time with the family as you need sleep and cannot have beer with less than 12hrs to start of shift then after 2 days off to do 7 late turns finishing at 2or 3 am and on top of that you have night shifts every other late turn so every 6 weeks)but all they do is push buttons and don’t even steer so that’s alright then don’t know many that live past 70 due to the shift pattern and that’s why they are paid the money

Wouldn’t employing those extra drivers require a 7 day timetable with train driver contracts adjusted accordingly? That would be a very good idea. By the way a teacher I know has quit to earn more money driving trains…..

So the argument that the people who educate our children should be paid less was succesful. Well done to everyone who campaigned for that. Teachers should be paid double what they currently get imo.

I'm up at the O2 on Saturday 8th for Iron Maiden and I've now decided that I will probably drive from eastbourne to Haywards Heath so I can utilize London Bridge on the journey home. I've also noted that even if by a miracle the 00.02 train from Victoria to Eastbourne still went it also includes a rail replacement bus journey making it a 2.5 hr ride home.

You want to pay newly qualified teachers 60k per year ? Not quite as simple as that. That would put them on higher pay than NHS lead practitioners. And on it goes…

Most of the new recruits for train driving over the last 4 years are ex police/fire people/prison officers

It is a 7 day timetable , 4 days a week rota and Sundays are outside working week it’s just that they rely on overtime to run the network and has been for 30 odd years , it’s a time bomb as loads are coming up to retirement ,but training is about 18 months now that’s if you make it through the tough selection tests , all the TOCS need to recruit many many more but they don’t

Well the government obviously seem emboldened amid the ridiculous ideas of some on here and in the general public as they are now talking about ignoring review bodies that recommend pay awards for the police, teachers and doctors. So kids will lose their teachers and we will all be less safe and the NHS will also be negatively affected. Good times!

part of the last dispute (or still ongoing, difficult to track) was they ToC wanted to put employees on a 7 day contact. as they like the overtime, that would mean not getting extra pay rate for weekends. the unions would love more employees (more potential members) so play it both ways, calling for additional staffing but also retaining overtime options. the ToC dont want to employ lots more as they end up over staffed, having to find enough work for staff to do a full time job, and know there's always takers to overtime.

That ship sailed when the unions refused to accept the recommendations of independent pay review bodies. Can’t have it both ways.

Especially given the amount of teaching they are required to do for a fraction of the compensation of a qualified teacher. My father was a teacher for 40 years and my ex partner for 8 years - many schools use TA’s as auxiliary teachers regularly despite being unqualified and paid a fraction of the salary.

I know it’s impossible wouldn’t it be great if the public boycotted trains for a month.
The government should step in and put an end to this nonsense. It’s a mockery they are crying to the banks about homeowners having a hard time and people can’t get to fecking work.

Trouble with this country is the public bend over and take everything thrown at them up the arse. French at least they have ago and stand up for themselves.

I agree with that. TAs do a better job ! Certainly much more knowledgeable about learning than someone who has done the wholly inadequate teacher training course.

Tax cuts for the well off was one element but she was also planning government handouts like the energy support scheme. This economic ineptitude was punished by the interest rate markets because it would have resulted in large increases in Government borrowing. Any similar lack of book balancing will result in a similar outcome and even higher interest rates is not exactly what we need at the moment. I’m all for taxing the rich but no political party has come up with a coherent plan for that as yet.

I see once again this is becoming an argument about which important jobs should be done for the lowest wage while everyone ignores the greedy tossers at the top laughing at us all fighting among ourselves
