[Football] FFP instead of points deduction, a luxury fine !!

I had to check I had not slept in for 4 days and this was April 1st.

So some greedy poorly run clubs are pushing for instead of a points deduction they would like a fine for overspending....

That makes sense.

I know it is the Mirror, but there must be some truth to this.

Well that's defeating the point. So they over spend by £30m, get a £30m fine and have now over spent by £60m! They will clearly then get another fine the following season.

A points deduction is a real deterrent which forces a bit of equality across the Premier League. Just adding fines to clubs with unlimited wealth just means they will Hoover up the trophies and pay the fines later. The cheats will prosper. Poorly run clubs will struggle more financially as they gamble on success paying off their fines and bigger clubs will carry on regardless.

The NFL isn't the model that's being touted. The NBA, which is, does seems to allow you to keep spending and just pay higher amounts of 'tax'. I say "seems" because I'm new to the subject and it seems crazily complicated. The USA has a thing for trying to keep sports competitive but this sounds like the old system that allowed Leicester, QPR and Bournemouth to cheat and just haggle over the fines. No real consequences if you have the deep pockets.

Points deductions have to be the penalty as it hurts the most. Fines will just be paid and allow the super rich to just keep on buying trophies and titles.

The basis of FFP originally was to keep teams spending within their means, and to keep them on a path where they're not losing millions each season, so to introduce a fine for overspending is just idiotic. Defeats the whole purpose. The smaller clubs will be kept in their lane because they cant afford to overspend and then get a fine, as it would put them in meaningful financial trouble, but the big oil clubs can just think 'ah f*** it, whats another XXX million spent this year'.

This. If the fines are high enough, I actually quite like the idea. The Premier League this season is a mess as no one knows what's happening. This morning they're saying there will be points deductions for the extreme cases (Man City & Chelsea for example).

Don't agree with this at all. I think this whole P&SR/FFP etc saga will fall flat if Man City and/or Chelsea aren't penalised heavily with points deductions for their misdemeanors. If that's the case then fines might be the only answer however I would suggest that fines should be a percentage of turnover and, as Commander says, should be distributed between the clubs that have been within the rules.

If you fine someone who is very rich, it’s not punitive at all, they will be unaffected because they have plenty of financial “slack”.
Driving offences, with penalty points, tend to penalise equally.
The only real way to punish clubs who breach FFP is by a points deduction (or, in extremis, expulsion) but that needs to be made more transparent with a sliding scale; eg breach by 0-£10m 2 points, £10-£20m 4 points etc. If over a certain amount, or repeated breached, then expulsion from the league (not relegation, throw the cheating b…..ds out and let them start wherever they can).

This, especially the sliding scale proposal, so everyone knows from the get go.
It is so simple, why can't that work, if you make it complicated, you give reason for doubt, which a cynical person could then think was made complicated so it could ultimately be picked apart.

So a club could overspend, get a pitiful fine, appeal the decision, have the fine reduced to a meaningless amount, and carry on as usual... Sounds about right

That's pretty much what it says in the article, which is great news for the Albion

However, I also agree that THIS is the more likely scenario. Once the PL take out 'admin' fees and 'costs', then there will probably be about 15 quid to share among the people who play by the rules.

Some of the clubs with very deep pockets will just completely abuse the system, be perfectly willing and able to pay the fine – and won't give a shite where it ends up. Farce.
