So I’m thinking why not blend two of many people’s very favourite aspects of NSC, with a thread full of political/protest songs.

Edit: Context is quite helpful so for this one:

I’ll kick things off with this banger, from former Barenaked Ladies front man Steven Page. The song appears to be about the Quebec City protests, specifically the police brutality during the Summit of the Americas 2002. A literal wall was built to keep protestors away from the summit, with peaceful protestors being beaten and tear gassed by the RCMP’s Thug With a Badge Division. The “wilted rose” represents the death of the symbolic red rose of social democracy.

Forgot to add, context is really helpful if it’s a relatively obscure (to me) issue…

Sunday Bloody Sunday really encapsulates the frustration of a Sunday - you wake up in the morning, you’ve got to read all the Sunday papers, the kids are running around, you’ve got to mow the lawn, wash the car, and you think “Sunday, bloody Sunday!”

Julian Cope, always entertains and always open with his opinions. This one gets straight to the point

Billy Bragg, on the right side of history, and an educational song to boot

The Exploited, always angry! And a cracking performance from Tim Roth. Visceral.
