Farnborough advice

There is a possibility of a decent position for me in the Farnborough (Hampshire) area.

NSC always seems quite good at this sort of thing so I wondered if anyone has the lowdown on a nice place to live within easy commute (30 minutes) of Farnborough or, indeed, whether it is a place to avoid.

many thanks

My in laws live in near Odiham which is about 20 miles sw of Farnborough. Its very twee and quite expensive. Its posh commuter belt very sleepy around there so not really my scene but the countryside is lovely and there's some good pubs and resturants. They have a station at Bentley so travels no problem.

I know Odiham and Farnborough and Alton are nice areas. As Franks said, a bit twee but not bad. You could do a lot worse.

Nibble, I work in farnborough and live in Reading. Farnborough itself is a shithole, crap pubs and some seriously dubious estates. Moving out a bit it gets quite expensive. Hartley witney is about 30 minutes away, nice little village but costly. Aldershot is full of squaddies and aldershot fans so probably worth avoiding for a seagull. Reading is about 1 hour away by road and the train journey is 30 minutes so depending on where you live the journey CAN be shorter by train.

Where and who might you be working for?

Check out Mytchett, Ash Vale, Ash, Ash Green, Tongham & Normandy on Rightmove. All these are 10 to 15 mins by car and are in Surrey. There is a huge difference in the standards of service provided by Surrey County Council as opposed to Rushmoor Borough Council (Hampshire)
Guildford & Farnham are within 30 mins. Probably best to avoid Aldershot

we live in a little village just the other side of alton from farnborough, can be in farnborough centre in about 20 mins. but no train station so you'd have to drive.

it is all very sleepy quiet around here, not sure if that is your thing.

once you get past aldershot onto the a31 most places are pretty pleasant, just depends what you want and can afford.

Farnborough has a dcecent train service to Waterloo. Decent roads as it has the M3 and M4 nearby.

It's only a possibility at this stage but a large Hotel in the area.

Sorry rool for some reason I thought you were nibble. I unreservedly appologise for the unwarranted slur to your character :)

Outlying parts of Farnborough aren't too bad actually but the town centre is a bit of a dump, although it is undergoing massive rebuilding and re-generation right now.

One point in its favour is that Farnborough is very close to the Home of World Darts, the Lakeside Centre at Frimley Green.

I live in rural Ireland at the minute, it can't be much more sleepy :lolol:, but I would be within easy distance of some reasonable towns and facilities.

I'd imagine Odiham is quite noisey considering it is home to the mighty Chinook helicopter! Not that many of them can take off at the moment!

Farnborough, Aldershot and North Camp are the pits of the earth - unles syou are a teenager with at least three kids or wear an army uniform. If you are able to commute by train then I would live somewhere on the outskirts of Bssingstoke where there are lots of new build developments and the town centre there has improved massively. If you are a bit more flush for cash then go a bit further down the motorway to Winchester area, which also has a fast enough link to Farnborough on the train (as does Micheldever).

If you are driving then anywhere down the A31 from Farnham south to about Winchester are all pretty reasonable and you can get to centre of Farnborough within 40 minutes although Alresford is probably at the far end of a thirty minute drive . Loads of new builds down that road particualrly in a smallish place called Four Marks.

RAF Odiham is indeed home to the Chinook. My Stepbrother was stationed there for many years and I used to love going there for their open days and having rides in the Chinooks.

I would steer well clear of commuting from Winchester to Farnborough by car if I were you, as the roads (mainly M1) get chokka pretty early in the morning. The train service is quite good between Basingstoke and Farnborough, and if your office is near the station, I'd look into commuting from Basingstoke, Fleet, Winchfield or even Woking. But I found that most of the offices are on the outskirts of the town and so you're stuck in car-commuting limbo.

Although Alton is nice, it's a weird sort of town in the middle of nowhere sort of place. Also, Basingstoke town centre is like a large version of London Road, but without the abundance of druggies....

I commute most days from just north-east of winchester to farnborough and do it in about 35 minutes with little traffic (mostly up the A31 or up M3 when I fancy a change) I think your mistake was going up the M1.

If you have the money, then Farnham is the nicest of the towns around that area, however Farnham makes Brighton look cheap.

Aldershot is a still a dump, but they are always trying to improve it, Farnborough is horrid, Fleet is passable and Basingstoke is a concrete hole.

Grew up in that part of the world, so PM me if you want any background on the areas.
