You are of course correct. They were called 'left half' and 'right half'

The two games when Hungary thrashed England(6-3 at Wembley, 7-1 in Budapest) were an absolute eye opener.
Poor Billy Wright, England's Centre Half(No. 5), didn't know what to do. Man marking, which a No.5 was supposed to do to the No. 9, would have left a big gap, so he maintained his position and in so doing let Hidegkuti run the show.

Don Revie was so impressed that he played that role in the Manchester City team of the mid 50s in what became known as the Revie Plan. I thoroughly enjoyed watching them play that formation in their 4-2 win at Fratton Park, the week before they won the FA Cup Final in 1956.

Moving away from the terminology (I agree, it's fine, as long as people generally understand what it means), I don't think it's the worst idea in the world tactically and we've done it, or variants on it, last season. Mostly Trossard where Maupay and Welbeck played more as wingers.

The way I see it, we've got lots of very talented attacking midfielders and, shall we say, unproven strikers. GP might take the view in some games, that Gross, MacAllister, Lallana and Trossard could take it in turns to be the one that attacks the box but overall play without a recognised striker

We used to play school football games on Saturday afternoons in the 50s so I only got to see a handful of men's football matches. By the time I went to Manchester University in 1959 Duncan Edwards was no longer with us.

Indeed...left half, right half ... although we did switch to a sweeper formation in our school team in about 1973.

Do we have a better term though? How would you describe the role Fabregas plated for Spain at Euro 2012, for example? He certainly wasn't a striker/No.9 in the traditional sense.
