I was getting quite upset at leaving Withdean so if they don't finish The Amex in time I'd be more than happy to stay at our leafy wonderland for one more year. No harm done.

Thats' nothing compared to what we used to play on at Withdean. Remember Southend anyone!!!

Yes I do remember the Southend game.

I remember the groundsman trying to paint a white line onto sopping wet mud on the touchline 5 minutes before the game started, but the rain kept washing the paint straight off.

Trenches at the Somme must have been less muddy than Withdean on that day.

Wasn't the Southend game where Oatway had a 20 yard head start on Carruthers and ended up 20 yards behind him as he scored?

Yes I do, and it just proved Ecovert (who were in charge of Withdean back then) didn't have a clue when it came to managing the stadium.

They were trying to sponge up the water on the pitch, only to empty it onto the track. Well anyone who know's how athletics tracks are built will know that the drainage system just puts the water back under the infield. This was before the club took over groundskeeping and put in a system to take the drainage the East end throwing area.

Another thing that made me laugh that day was where they were getting the sand from. You have TWO training pits on the touchline on the back straight. Do they take it from there? No! They use the competition pit up the top (Now behind the away stand).
