In 1649
To St George's Hill
A ragged band they called the Diggers
Come to show the people's will
They defied the landlords
They defied the law
They were the dispossessed
Reclaiming what was theirs

'We come in peace' they said
'To dig and sow
We come to work the land in common
And to make the waste land grow
This earth divided
We will make whole
So it can be
A common treasury for all

The sin of property
We do disdain
No one has any right to buy and sell
The earth for private gain
By theft and murder
They took the land
Now everywhere the walls
Rise up at their command

They make the laws
To chain us well
The clergy dazzle us with heaven
Or they damn us into hell
We will not worship
The God they serve
The God of greed who feeds the rich
While poor men starve

We work, we eat together
We need no swords
We will not bow to masters
Or pay rent to the lords
We are free men
Though we are poor
You Diggers all stand up for glory
Stand up now

From the men of property
The orders came
They sent the hired men and troopers
To wipe out the Diggers' claim
Tear down their cottages
Destroy their corn
They were dispersed
But still the vision lingers on

You poor take courage
You rich take care
This earth was made a common treasury
For everyone to share
All things in common
Al people one
We come in peace -
The order came to cut them down

We could appease the residents of Falmer, by letting them have a final 'pitch invasion', cut bits of turf to place in their gardens and call it 'hallowed ground' from the field of dreams.

If there are ANY more complaints, refer them to messrs Archer and Bellotti, as it was because of THEM that we need this field.

We should have a Blue Peter-style memorial garden at Falmer with people planting their turf.

Absolutely.

There's a classic short story by Canadian W.P. Kinsella*, "The Thrill of the Grass", in which at first just one old man and his grand-daughter, then another, for his crippled wife, another with his son, then dozens, then hundreds of real fans, sneak into a baseball stadium during a player strike.

Each person brings a square foot of real grass and a sharp knife. One patch at a time, one night at a time, the thousands of square feet of Astroturf is replaced by the real thing. There is no leader, no coordination -- no one speaks -- some water, some mow, some fertilize -- each fan justs know what has to be done, and done it is.

When the players return after six weeks, to discover actual turf again, they can smell it as soon as they step out of their cars. The veterans feel their old joints and bones grow young again, the younger players for the first time know the thrill of the grass.

One of the masterpieces of North American short fiction. I hand it to people who don't understand why team sports, and especially a stadium, can mean so much to people. Sometimes after reading it, they begin to understand.

*They made the movie Field of Dreams out of one of his novels.

It sounded Field of Dreamsish. Probably my favourite movie of all time.

There's a hommage to the short story in Field of Dreams. Ray Liotta's character says

Joe Jackson: Getting thrown out of baseball was like having part of me amputated. I've heard that old men wake up and scratch itchy legs that have been dust for over fifty years. That was me. I'd wake up at night with the smell of the ball park in my nose, the cool of the grass on my feet... The thrill of the grass.
