Facebook- I don't understand

I should probably have a cull of people I don't know particularly well that are able to see my intimate musings. Very handy for arranging events and so on.

But BoF, how would I be able to stalk you then??

I'm seriously considering the same - I have friends from primary school on there that I haven't seen/spoken to in more than 15 years. I tried using the new 'list' function to weed out the people I don't want to see stuff from - unfortunately the webpage news feed still defaults to 'all' of my friends and I haven't worked out how to access the lists on the Android app.

I like the way they've changed it and put the feed on the right which appears to update you with things you really, really couldn't give a toss about. Stuff like someone posting on the wall of a person that isn't even on your friend list.

WTF is that "top stories" thing all about too? I'll be the judge of what's a top story, I don't need Facebook to tell me what I will find interesting.

My attitude towards Facebook is exaclty the same as my view of mobile phones - a useful invention, which can also be fun, but which far too many (mainly younger) people let dominate their lives - they'd rather post stuff on Facebook (or text) than go out and actually have a real conversation with real friends or a partner.

And as for these :tosser:s who have 700-800 'friends' on Facebook - FFS, how many of them do they actually know in real life, how many of them have they ever met in person?

It seems to me that boasting so many 'friends' is actually a sign of being shallow, superficial and insecure - 'Oooh, everyone, look how cool and popular I am.'

Surely the quality of friendships should be much more important than number of so-called friends?

Most people are so obsessed with celebrity culture, that they buy every gossip mag on the shelf and then try to convince themselves they can be like them, that they live that kind of lifestyle and everyone would be interested in their life, which is sad and delusional.

So the majority of facebook pages look like an advert for 'Look at me, isn't my life great lol! smiley face' What they don't realise is they look like complete wank stains with their pictures of their latest holiday to Spain, pictures of their shit night out down West Street.

When I've seen people's status it's usually things like "Just cooked some oven chips and left the oven on OMG LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" f***ing dickheads.

Rant over.

My sister posts similarly dull things like:

"Off to make a cup of tea" - most days this appears
"What should I have for dinner tonight?"
"Went out to the shops and got rained on!!! LOL!"
etc.
Along with about 400 Farmville updates every day.

I hasten to add she is now on my ignore list.

Why do people feel the need to share so much crap with everyone. Whole holiday albums, photos of cakes they've just baked, what they've just had for lunch and for me even worse, photos of their small children and babies in the bath.
Now, I'm on Facebook as well and as such can't be too judgemental but I never share personal stuff.
I'm just trying to understand why people do it.

UMM, bit like NSC ??

If it existed when I was at uni I'd still be in touch with some people I'd have liked to be (worked abroad after and naturally slipped out of touch but now back home). It's good to keep in touch with a few best friends from school days spread out around the world and use it alot for family and close friends. Random work colleagues or people who add me after a single day course somewhere who you're never going to see again? Meh! If they want to know what I'm upto fair play but I just don't look them up and after couple of weeks doesn't impinge on my life at all having them 'friend' me

I love it when people update their statuses with open statements like, 'I can't believe I just did that...LOL'...meaning their 'friends' will have to ask 'What?' Attention seeking at it's most sad.

Also girls saying 'I feel really fat today :( '... ending in a list of comments telling them they are beautiful...

Facebook is brilliant, why do you think it's worth so much money? Soon almost everything you do online will be linked to it.

It's SO much more than 'what shall I have for dinner?' and all that shit which, by the way, you can hide if you want to. Facebook is what you make of it.

Genuine question Chappers, what could/should I be using it for? I tried out the Guardian 'app' the other day and it just pissed me off by insisting on posting what I was reading on my wall. I appreciate they there are increasingly tie-ins to facebook (Spotify got grief recently for doing this) but it (and Zuckerberg is particularly evangelical when it comes to this) seem to believe that we should want to publish our entire lives for others to see- and, quite frankly, I don't. Maybe I'm missing something but I just don't see the benefits of the various bells and whistles being added all the time (although having said that I love the new timeline feature).

exactly , and I don't understand why people don't use the option more rather then just whinge about it

top corner of a message, click the cross , hide - it's simplicity itself.

I have to be honest, I'm quite an avid Facebook user. However, it has it's other uses.

At my football club, we use Facebook as a way of letting parents and supporters know fixtures, results and updates about the club. For this, we've found it an easier and more cost effective way of communicating with people compared to email, newsletters and text messages.

Alot of our coaches lead busy lives and so it's a perfect way to keep everyone upto date of stuff going on.

There are some, however, that are obsessional with Facebook and they live their ENTIRE life through it. However, is there really any difference between those people and those who are regular posters on NSC?

I'd also say that there are a fair amount of obsessive and anonymous nutcases on here than there is on Facebook where you know the person who is calling you a tw*t!

Oddly, I can stand trivial stuff but am not so keen on people having a meltdown on there.

Even odder is a couple of people I know who will go out of their way to talk to me in real life but won't accept my friend request!
