Been discussing with Ben and I said that on last nights display I can see why they want Fabregas as he would walk into the team in place of either Xavi or Iniesta but Ben disagrees and says he wouldnt get in the side but on the bench. What is the opinions on here.

He could not get a place in the Spain team ahead of them, so don't see why he would get in at club level.

He would walk into the team? What are you on Grandad, drugs?

He's not better than the two best central midfielder in the world, is he? He's been poor this season by his standards, but even at his best he's nowhere near as good at Iniesta.

They wouldn't be prepared to pay 35m + if he wasn't going to start. I'd expect him to partner Xavi in the middle with Pedro having to settle for a place on the bench, with Iniesta operating in a more advanced role.

Xavi would be the second name on the team sheet (behind Messi) for me. He pulls all the strings.

I'd say Bensgrandad had lost the plot if it weren't for the fact he obviously hadn't a clue where it was in the first place..

Fabregas would be a first team regular at Barcelona. however, thats regular, not key first team, and they dont apparently rotate much. so i reckno he will find it rather frustrating there warming the bench or being understudy to Xavi/Iniesta/Busquets.

I don't think they believe he is better, just Xavi is 31 and in a few years they will want someone similar to him to replace him.

Is the correct answer.

Fabregas is seen as the logical and natural successor to Xavi and they want to get hold of him and ensure that he is ready to slot seamlessly into that spot when required.

Would he walk into the current team ahead of Xavi or Iniesta? No, absolutely ridiculous view.

very true indeed. in a couple of years xavi will not be able to play nearly as regularly as he does now

It never ceases to amaze me how differently people can view football, and how people can't possibly accept that someone else might have a different opinion. I disagree with you, BG, I don't think Fabregas is better than Xavi and I certainly don't think he's better than the magician that is Andres Iniesta (he's taken on the title of "world's most underrated", from Xavi a few years ago...) but as mr Frutos said, Xavi is 31 and will need replacing. I don't think Barcelona need Fabregas, brilliant as though he is, for another couple of years, which is why I don't think they'll spend anything like the £40million suggestion. The longer they leave it, the cheaper he will be.

Celarly the idea is that Fabregas is the long term successor to Xavi or Iniesta - but I don't see why Xavi can't go on and on. His game is about technique, intelligence and quickness of mind more than anything else so I don't see why he can't continue to dominate for Barca and Spain for at least two or three more years.

Another point - they weren't willing to pay £40m for Fabregas, that's why he's not a Barcelona player now.

i think he could still play the big games in a few years but as with scholes and others when they reach that age they can't play week in week out when barca are fighting on lots of fronts. but as u say they don't feel he is worth 40 mill and in time maybe they have some new youngsters coming through to fill that role
