Banned for life, I saw that story on SSN about the amateur rugby star who is now blind in one eye thanks to someone gouging his eyes, the scum who did it should be sent to jail, absolutely disgraceful

I believe that they differentiate dependent on severity. Stade Francais' David Attoub recently got 70 weeks whereas Julien Dupuy got 23 weeks. Both incidents I believe were in the same game, but differed in Severity.

Harsh punishments are needed to stop gouging. It needs to be stopped and now. I haven't voted above although I would be tempted to vote for 6 months upwards.

Completely ridiculous (the different punishments, not your post)

Fucks sake, thats a bit like having different jail terms for stabbing someone dependant on how far you push the knife in.

BAN THE GOUGERS *

*opinion completely irrelevant as I don't like, or watch rugby but thought I'd chuck my twopennorth in anyway

I think it should be a one year ban for first offence, and life-time ban for second offence. It's mainly a French issue, although England have named Hartely at hooker who got done for it twice in the same game

I don't watch rugby, and it's one of the rare sports I don't bother playing either. But eye gouging is just disgusting and literally every time SSN are talking about rugby there is an eye gouging case going on, which is just unbelievable. What goes through these peoples minds?! Why gouge someone elses eyes?! It's UNBELIEVABLE and disgusting, there is no justification for it. These people should be ashamed of themselves.

It's typical of how sports administrators see their sport as above the law. Perpetrators should be prosecuted by the courts and if necessary, jailed. It's the same as football, you look at incidents like Thatcher and Morgan and they would rank as GBH if they happened on Friday night.

rugby, a game for cocks, played by cocks & run by cocks. If footballers or football fans got up to some of the "high jinks" the rugby set do we'd all be inside.

I'm sure you're right, what with people like Ben Thatcher and Roy Keane proving your point.

Yes there are some complete cocks in rugby, but there are more in football I'm afraid.

The perpetrator should be fined and banned. A ban designed to maximise the amount of rugby they miss.

Whilst it is not always wise to compare bans and offences - Stevens was banned for two years for having traces of illegal drugs in his system, whereas you can get a relatively short ban for intentional physical harm. Dean Richards has been banned from coaching for three years after his involvement in 'bloodgate'.

There are always going to be tactics used to inflict pain on the opposition, in rucks, scrums and mauls. It is a physical game and sadly some players will take it far too far. However, gouging is rare when you consider how much rugby is played, thankfully.
