"Explaining the Military to civvies.......
The United Kingdom Armed Forces explained:
The Royal Navy is the oldest, Mum and Dad made all their parenting mistakes with him. The Army is the middle son, they are the explorers who left home and no one cared. The Royal Marines are the youngest and Mum and Dad let them do whatever they want. They have an inferiority complex due to their small size.
Well, Mum and Dad got a divorce once all the boys had grown up. Mum got remarried to a rich bloke and quickly gave birth to a fourth son, the Royal Air Force. She loves him the most, showers him with the best toys and buys him whatever he wants. When they go on holiday, they fly first class, stay in five star hotels and enjoy the finest meals. The RAF is spoiled rotten and his three older brothers bitterly resent him for this.
Finally there is the RAF Regiment. The RAF Regiment is the rich stepfathers illegitimate son from a fling with a filthy prostitute during the seven year itch. None of the other brothers think or act like he's part of the family and treat him like the unwanted ginger ******* stepchild that nobody wants.
That's the best way to explain the difference between the UK Armed Forces and their internal dynamics to civilians."

While it’s good ,it’s ironically very military humour. Which as a civvy, I must say, don’t much care for.

I'm a civvy but a challenge if I may?

Your Mum & Dad claim the first born was Royal Navy but shirley we had an army before we had even invented fighting boats [even the Vikings didn't fight in their boats, they landed first].
Like, where was the RN in 1066 when French Billy sailed over and duffed up Harrold and his army?
Not having a pop at RN, just doubting they were first born?

The RN was formed in 1546, Army was formed in 1660.

The Royal Navy is and always will be the senior service.
The finest fighting service in the world.[emoji636]⚓

Is there an explanation of why so many of the ex military on here seem to be polarised either as well balanced, intelligent and worldly wise or end up like Chicken Shat-Lightly Baked ?

EX RAF here as well, this is actually spot on, and yes it is military humour but seeing as its about the military that is to be expected and so not ironic at all.

The Navy IS acknowledged as the first of the military services, before its creation the Army (1066 and all that) were not really a national standing army, but conscripted and press ganged almost on an as needs basis, with various Lords and Knights having small personal armies that would nominally be under the overall charge of the King. The Navy was the first nationally organised standing military force

It should be noted that the various branches basically despise each other and will not for a second miss an opportunity to denigrate, humiliate, take the piss out of, and in all other ways show their loathing for each other, until that is any one other than the military have a pop, then they will instantly unite the whole armed forces against them. There is nothing more united than the British Military when push comes to shove

I think it is fair to say that we are however all united in despising rockapes (RAF regiment).

For an Albion trivia bonus point... which BHA manager served (during national service) in the RAF Regiment between 1953 and 1955?

I meant ironic in the sense it is designed to explain to civvies but comes across as very military. Don't worry, it really was a one line, throw away comment. At ease :)

Why is the RAF regiment hated? What’s the story.
