Always interesting to think what lower league players do when retired, I'm thinking league 1 and below, where yes you earn decent money for a twenty something but likely not enough for a comfortable life after football retirement.

Starting a brand new career in your mid thirties with mortgage, bills and kids must be tricky when you are used to a higher income. Its not like you can just walk into another £70k job when you retire from a league 2 career

Quite a lot make their way to non-league and go semi pro while they set up a new career. I follow brackley town very closely in national league north and we have had quite a few examples of players recently. For example luke graham who played centre back in the league for Luton decided to focus on his next career so went part time and started lecturing at an FE college. For the last 18 months we had Carl baker who must have played champo for about 200 games for Coventry, Mk, Portsmouth (possibly others too) and he plays part time while he sets up a football academy.

In fact I know quite a lot of the players quite well and they actually choose to be part time footballers. They will earn more from football and a career than they would make as a league 1 or 2 footballer, and they have a career lined up. Obviously there are some who think they could be the next Jamie Vardy, but most of them are blokes who have careers and are lucky enough to get paid to do their hobby!

I have heard some horrible stories about players from league 1 and 2 who have nothing when they get their career ended which can happen at any age. It is a brutal world.

Bit of a strange chain of events, and I don’t know how I missed it at the time, it appears to have been quite a well publicised fall from grace.

I signed him on to play for Horsham reserves twenty years ago, only played a handful of games, then buggered off.
