The problem is now, if 6 points is seen as the penalty, what's to stop the likes of Chelsea, Newcastle, Man City with their rich backers just spending billions (if they wish) knowing that the probable success would likely out weigh the effects of a 6 point deduction, which is realistically do able if trying to scramble into the top 4 and Champions League places?

Seems to me there should be a set standard that says for every £1m over you get a 1 point deduction.

Because they would certainly get more than 6 points (even after appeal) if they deliberately flouted the FFP rules like that.

Everton’s points deduction was further reduced because of mitigating circumstances and their cooperation with the investigation as well as Premier League Executive applying inconsistent penalty criteria - no doubt these will be put into a more transparent and set framework going forward.

I suspect Man City will be facing more than a 10 point reduction once all the 115 charges have been investigated (Everton had a 10 point deduction for one breach ) and many of the charges against Citeh seem more about cooking the books than getting into debt with capital expenditure (which was Everton’s main offence I believe) and they have failed to cooperate with the League or comply with UEFA FFP rules. Therefore, the charges are altogether more serious.

We’ll know in the Autumn but either way, spending billions in the summer transfer won’t be on the cards for any of the big clubs.

Is it right that if Chelsea were to qualify for Europe they would face European FFP charges?

Yes, as does any team that qualifies for Europe.

The Premier League permits losses of £105m over a 3-year period. Clubs who qualify for Europe can only lose up to £68.5m over a 2-year period. UEFA also limit player amortization to five years. This means that Chelsea would be, on paper, worse off on the balance sheet in the eyes of UEFA compared to the PL.

Chelsea would ultimately be left with two options. Sell quickly or take a fine and a ban. It is likely Chelsea may need to sell anyway before the end of June to align with Premier League FFP. It may be more advantageous to them to accept a fine and ban if they ended up only qualifying for the low-profit Conference League.

No real penalty, the first charge should have been sorted last season, they'd have gone down then, would have a real penalty then.

It would be great if a timeline could be put on some of the other investigations. Knowing that City and Chelsea and anyone else might actually be in some kind of jeopardy rather than a perpetual twilight zone would go some way to giving the system some credibility
