When I was in the RAF we done cold weather trials for the Tristar aircraft in Fairbanks Alaska in deep winter, coldest recorded was -51C could not go outside without face masks and specialised cold weather clothing, was there for 3 weeks , no daylight just damn cold...but with all the correct gear and not being stupid ( not staying outside for more than a few mins) its bearable but live there ? NO WAY

Cars were left running in the car park as the engine heaters were useless....i remember asking a copper about people stealing cars if left running....his reply.....where the hell are they going to go? Anchorage is 400 miles south...

My mum would just tut dismissively and say, "put a jumper on."

Used to work in Sainsburys as a teenager, a few minutes in the walk in freezer was my go to way to wake up on a Sunday morning after a night out drinking. I'm sure you could feel your bones freezing!

Pah! call that cold.

This is feeble compared to some on here, but genuinely the coldest I have ever felt is waiting for the park and Ride at the AMEX - on a freezing night with the wind whipping up, and on one occasion rain/sleet as well, when the first wave of buses has gone and you are waiting interminably for the bus back to Mill Road.

This was in spite of dressing up against it - thermal underwear, heavyweight overcoat but crucially perhaps no hat. The serious teeth chattering did not stop until I was back in the car and somewhere alongside Shoreham Airport on the A27.

Now maybe that's why some people leave early sometimes.
