... I think the team need a specialist coach to train them to be much more effective offensively. Hughton, Calderwood & Jones are all ex defenders and it concerns me that our limited attempts on goal this season have been very poor.
It's not just shooting practice but a much broader appreciation of attacking play from the back that's needed. Our transition from defence to attack is awful, with no movement, no pace or urgency. Other than Leeds at home we have consistently failed to counter successfully and don't have the quality or guile to break down organised defences after we allow them to regroup.
When we do create a break we don't make the right runs into the box , making a final ball often impossible to be a dangerous one.
I lost count today of the number of times that our players passed the ball behind their teammate, thereby losing momentum. Whilst we have a VERY annoying knack of missing an obvious and "safe" forward pass. Instead making a shorter, slower pass to a closer team mate who, guess what, then passes it to the guy who should have received the ball in the first place! Again, losing all momentum & the chance to stretch the opposition.
An ex-professional striker could bring this insight to the coaching staff. God knows we need it!
