Players always think they are ready before they are. Potter got it pretty much spot on with Caicedo really, as he has with pretty much all of our young players.

We're just not culturally attuned to it in this country. Yet, we see top sides on the continent, Dortmund, Ajax, Barca, Bayern, plus more progressive European national sides, happy to entrust enormous games to players aged 17 or 18.
Part of it is the physicality thing, but that's insulting to other leagues. More likely it's inate conservatism, a national aversion to something untried, an unhealthy love of short termism.
Graham Potter was far from the worst. But Caicedo came out again in an interview recently with a comment that he felt he waited too long and I think there are one or two others who were held back too long.
My post was less an opinion I have about Potter, it's a guess I have for the future. We'll recruit a new head coach on the basis of someone who can show they can develop players and that coach, if we're on a run like we were last season where we couldn't score for months on end, won't be nearly as shy of playing Evan or any other young player who's scoring regularly at u23 rather than continually rely on the senior players who aren't repaying his faith.

I can't agree. That loan to the bottom team in Belgium was a complete waste of his time. We should have bought him through earlier. Very easy to say with hindsight of course, but that's the point, if you don't play them, you don't find out

I don't think a lot of PL coaches would try to solve a goal scoring problem though putting a recently-turned-17-year-old in the starting eleven. It reeks of desperation and is not very fair to the player to put that kind of pressure on him that early. Miss a "sitter" or two and he'll have a couple of hundred Solid at the backs sending him angry CAPS LOCK messages on Instagram telling him to **** off and die.
Did you watch any of his games in the U23s? I have to say he looked decent, but not ready, or anything like the player who made such a huge impact on his return.
There are always reasons to carry on doing things the way you've always done them. Potter started out quite brave. Sanchez for Ryan etc, but started playing things more safely after a couple of years. Too safely in some cases. I know that your worker ant like desire to mount a defence of your hero is rushing to the surface, maybe we'll just disagree on this one.
And Spain might win or lose a world cup final with 2 x 18 year olds in their midfield. I guess there's a risk those lads might get negativity online as well, if they fluff something up which costs them the tournament. But I don't see much clamour for them to be eased in more slowly.
Well, there appears to be no one else agreeing with you that the team should be picked based on how it works in Football Manager.
Not a lot of clamour for that here no... most likely because no one here gives a shit about the Spanish national team. And generally speaking, people love to watch the rise of a young new player almost as much as they love to watch their downfall a year or two later. It doesn't make it the right decision to play them unless they're ready.

Bearing in mind the quality of their senior squad, I’m actually quite surprised he’s not been called up to play for them.
I’m sure JRG will be along shortly to correct me on that.
