I’m a little confused - commentators all saying as a fact that Poland are out.

Obviously not going to happen but if they won their last game by a number of goals they would still be in with a shout of best 3rd, so can’t technically be out at this point?

They should from the principal of: is there a clear and obvious reason to disallow the goal on first viewing? No- goal. The principal they seem to working on instead is: Is there any reason to disallow the goal? Not sure, let’s watch 10 replays and analyse in minute detail- 5 minutes later: not sure, goal disallowed.
The goal was disallowed on the field. VAR didn't overturn a valid goal.

Here we go. English f***ing officials. Stinking the f***ing tournament out is our nation. Embarrassing
I'd blame Atwell. Again. How can you blame Taylor for that? He should have had a look at the incident himself and made the decision IMO. To note, that would have slowed the game down.

Edit: I've just caught up and have got this wrong.

It wasn't VAR that disallowed it. They just confirmed (slowly) the on field decision.
We don't know that. With semi-automated offsides, the assistant gets a signal from the system when a player is in an offside position. That could easily have happened in the time it took for Taylor to consult the linesman, who didn't have his flag up before that conversation. It was a subjective call at that point, which VAR was best-placed to judge with multiple, more informative angles.

Head-to-Head - Poland having lost to Austria now can't finish above them,

Is that what happened though? The assistant flagged, that's not the same as the goal was disallowed. I may have missed it, but it looked to me like no decision was made on the field as they immediately deferred it to VAR.

I think that's very much what happened...

1. Taylor consulted the assistant, and indicated offside.
2. At the conclusion of the VAR review, Taylor just gave a "get on with the game" gesture. He absolutely didn't draw a box in the air to indicate a VAR over-rule.

I think Taylor consulted the assistant because the semi-automated system had signalled a player in an offside position. He therefore put the flag up, but it was for VAR to decide whether the offside player was relevant.

Hopefully UEFA will reveal details of how the decision played out, which would help understand similar ones in future.

I'm happy for a qualified referee to correct me, but....

Surely there is ALWAYS an on-field decision, for anything that might occur on the field of play? The role of VAR is then to review that decision (for applicable situations) and only over-rule or advise the referee to view the monitor in instances where the VAR believes an incorrect decision has been made.

There can be no such thing as the on-field officials NOT making a decision and simply deferring to the VAR.

I love Kante. Really good players in that position win games and there are actually very few of them.
These tournaments are a joy for watching players like this. I have latched onto that Nico Williams chap. Last night was a joy after the Denmark debacle. So fluid and energetic and no antics either.

I actually am a qualified referee (well, i was, not done it for many years, and obviously never had anything to do with var).

I agree that's what should happen. I'm not sure I have your faith that things are so clear cut though...
