Nail on the head. England XIs tend to be a collection of the best players often shoehorned into sub-optimal roles to accommodate them with little thought on how them might work together.
Yes, and that's one of the reasons Germany hit the ground running better than England as they played their opener in the same way we'd see a decent PL team play

They came out second half and didn't allow us to settle as they were more on the front foot IMO. Think they did well second half, bringing on Tadic gave them a bit more quality and England more to think about, you can't give him much space. Should have brought on Gallagher the moment that sub was made, plus Pavlović really raised his levels second half and had Saka's number.
Fair comment they did have more of a go second half because they had too. However it shouldn’t be beyond a decent manager to deal with that with a more positive tactical switch or as you say with subs

Lars Sivertsen made a decent point on Football Weekly - he thought the dropping of intensity was completely intentional from England - it was a risky move from Southgate, but winning meant it paid off.

We have 3 points, are top of the group and have only really exerted ourselves for 30 minutes. That seems like sensible tournament management to me. Would it really be better if we had smashed them 4-2 but knackered ourselves out? Maybe throw an injury in there to Kane also?

No panic. I fully believe we will see a more creative, expansive England against Denmark - their draw means they will have more need to get something from our game.
The problem comes if the Vlahovic shot goes in then we could be dropping points

Take your point, but equally Kane's chance and Walker's ball across the line were as good chances if not better. We could easily be sat here today with it being 2-0 last night, it was a cracking save from Kane's header.

Agree but I think he did manage to settle it late on, and saw the game out, the last 5 mins + injury time they made very little threat, like I said I think Foden for a quicker player would have been my decision but understand why not with Trippier.

If it was intentional and from the manager then sack him today.
Did Germany drop off? Did Spain? Will France?
Luckily I think Lars is full of shit. No top level manager tells his team to drop intensity and invite the oppo onto them at HT when only 1-0 up.
No, in the 2nd half Serbia up their tempo and brought on a player who can run the tempo, Kane lost his positional disipline, Saka dropped due to fitness. Southgate should have made subs much earlier, that was/is my main problem with him.

Insane levels of entitlement. We aren't the best side in the tournament - France are. Pure arrogance.
Just what bollocks is this entitlement crap about.?

Success is to win. I care little about England if honest, I support my chosen team Brighton. I hope England do well but expect nothing as they have failed too often with poor management and luck. Insane levels of entitlement my arse.

So De Zerbi was never successful as he never won anything?

Spain did drop off yes, they were 3-0 up however, England could have quite easily been 2-0 up at HT. I fear nothing will actually make you appreciate Southgate as most of his detractors have already made their mind up about him, and ultimately the only thing that won’t make him the worst manager in the world is if he wins it, just like every single manager since Alf Ramsey.

What was his aim? The club had stated what they expected, he went one better, so in that he was. We're talking about England do they go hoping to do well, expecting to win? What's the ambition? Germany expect to win as do France, us? Anything less than winning is failure. We're not f***ing Scotland!

If that was Southgate’s plan then he has bigger balls than RDZ

My ambition is probably Semis, then it’s a lottery then IMO. The nature of knockout football.

It is a lottery one that the manager can have a large say in. I'd say your ambition is great for a loser. Ask the average German or
French person.

The French team is far superior to ours, if I was them I’d be expecting to win, the Germans not so much.

Defeatest. Plain and simple.

Ambition is to win it. Expectation is another matter. Expectation under Southgate is to limp out against a better organised side.

We can outplay the French and arguably matched them at the last World Cup, there’s no reason why we can’t win against them if we meet them. The defeatist view is that we’ve already lost because we only won 1-0 v Serbia, I would call a lot of this response an over reaction

As Potter would say perhaps I need a history lesson, or perhaps not. It has been on repeat in all my 56 years on the planet.

boo hoo we might not win the tournament.

Surely its more enjoyable getting behind the team and going on the journey.

Brighton were shit for the majority of my life , never once did I write them off and desert them

We have what we have , its OUR country. Get behind the lads
