Yes the officiating has been excellent, and yes VAR has been brilliant, swift and unobtrusive. But it's the players that need to take a bow. They've been excellent, committed to playing attacking football, played in good spirit, only one horror challenge (Porteous) and that got a red (the only one?). They're a credit to the beautiful game.

CL and Euro’s refs have been exemplary for many years. In total control, mouthy bullies get nowhere near them without an instant yellow, not homers, an incredible knack in getting almost every decision correct.

What a contrast to the PL lot.

And why is VAR so swift?
I would offer a different angle by saying that EPL refs are under more scrutiny and also the club coloured tinted glasses. Folk tend to be a lot more passive when watching neutral matches. EPL refs tend to be well appointed in Europe.

Anthony Taylor is a prime example. Much maligned, yet has a two major international club finals and a World Cup last eight match on his recent CV.

The refs body have to keep apologising for major gaffs.

The way VAR has been deployed is exemplary.

the officiating is generally at a higher standard.
There will be the usual referee apologists along claiming club bias, but the officiating standard is head and shoulders above Prem League.

How the f*** Stuart Atwell has been included in the English contingent is above me.

Michael Oliver (our best ref allegedly) gave a freekick in a threatening position from a blatant dive to Ukraine earlier on.
No surprise.

Every tournament VAR works fine and people praise it

Then it comes back to the PL and it’s usually a shitshow

If only we could work out the moment that happens…

Well,
bring in that only the captain talks to the referee!
Quick var decisions and let us know why.
employ the German lady who explains brilliantly the decisions for us.

the var hand ball decision against Belgium IMHO was horrendous and inexplicable

apart from that it’s been fantastic. Love the Dutch fans btw!

First lengthy VAR call and it’s Stuart Attwell…

.......and suddenly the VAR has gone all PL-ish and rubbish, after being generally so good for much of the tournament. Wonder who the VAR is?

Oh....................

And there we have it. Surprise, surprise, I disagree wildly with Atwell. Who thinks that it should have been the on-field ref that makes the decision by looking at the screen? Note, this will slow the game down.

All turned to shit with two English officials. I hope we have no Brits involved in meaningful games as the tournament progresses.

No surprise it was our refs that took an age with VAR but the on field decision was offside and I don’t think our VAR would overturn it. Maybe if their had been a different nationality in the VAR room they may have asked the referee to review his original decision.

Once they gave it as offside and obviously deemed the Dutch player to be interfering I thought they was no chance VAR would change the decision
