Exactly !!!

Why doesn't the EU make them remove the disk defrag utility, or the FTP command line or the backup program ??? There's plenty of competitors to those functions as well. Politicians and the EU in particular barely know how to use a mouse let alone understand an operating system and its programs and utilities.

It's really down to politics and the EUs hate of extremely successful businesses. Strangely they do nothing about the anti-competitive restrictions Germany has in place to prevent a take over of VW - hypocrites the lot of them !!!

All it means is that when setting up the pc/laptop there will be an option to select a preferred browser instead of IE being the default browser. After using Safari , Opera and Chrome alongside IE and Firefox , I have ditched Safari , Opera & Chrome and now just use 2 browsers. When I uninstalled google chrome I found out it leaves behind tracking cookies that cant be removed (should have read ALL the small print).

I quite like Chrome actually. And Firefox can do some odd things every now and again so I'm seriously considering switching to the Google way

Never had any problems with Firefox but having fun and games currently trying to use their "helpful" support notes to copy my bookmarks to a new laptop.

its not just a little utuility though is it, its a major application. the reason people have been so keen to screw MS on this is that 10 years ago they tried to push Netscape out of business. It was recognised that having already conquered the Office software market and had everyone over a barrel there, they didnt want the same to happen to the internet broswer if it could be helped. It was too late for Netscape, but its not for Firefox.

having said that, i dont think the EU should mandate one alternative over the others, there should be choice and it starts to get messy there.

I only use IE for one purpose, to log onto Seagulls World to listen to commentary.

It is far from being the fastest, most reliable browser.

The others are simply better and not for any geeky reasons. They are simply more user friendly which what we are after at the end of the day isn't it ?

I not a massive of firefox to be honest, but it's streets ahead of IE.

I tend to switch between Chrome and (I'm typing this on) Safari.

The reason for two is that I'm got a problem with accessing a single website I use all the time with Safari. Can't be bothered to find out why at the moment, so I use Chrome for that.

I really like the way Safari smooths the fonts on this page, without wanting it all my system.

I also really like the combined address bar, google search on Chrome and the visualisations of your popular pages. It does have a little design niggle where it's easy to click on a bookmark by mistake, but it's minor

I can't choose between the two to be honest, and use them interchangeably.

Haven't touched firefox for ages, and if it wasn't for the digital rights issue and Seagulls World, I'd never go near IE ever again.

It really is a pile of sh*t compared to other browsers available.

Not in the slightest - I can't stand IE. What I don't appreciate is the double standards of the EU - it seems perfectly reasonable that Microsoft should be able to bundle their own product with their operating system. After all it's not rocket science to change to another one !!! The EU, at most, should insist that IE is removed and offered as a free download - to force them to bundle a different browser just gives the advantage to someone else rather leveling the playing field.

Stupid. If you're not clever enough to download Firefox, Chrome or Safari for yourself, then you don't need to.. simple as that.

There's an add on called Foxmarks that I use - its very easy (it has to be for me to use it) and will copy all bookmarks from your PC to your laptop. It will also synchronise them from time to time so that both PC and laptop have the same bookmarks, even if you change or add one.

Can someone explain what is better about Firefox than IE, in a nutshell? About 4 years ago I dumped IE for Firefox, but found them to be remarkably similar. The only useful thing I remember was being able to install a plugin for Firefox that allowed me to download YouTube videos. On the current machine though I've never seen the need to download Firefox, as IE seems to do everything I need.

I have all the browsers on my main PC and still prefer Firefox which seldon gives me any problems. I have tried Chrome but can't get used to it. I've also tried Safari but cannot see any benefit and frankly find Firefox and Chrome quicker. However, it infuriates me that IE cannot be deleted, I never use it and find it both slow and clumsy.

However, wht the EEC hope to gain from forcing Microsoft to sell they operating systems with Firefox is beyond me. When does the end ? Will Microsoft ne compelled to have Open Office installed ? Acrobat Reader ? Flash and so on ?

Then when will they start telling ford they have to have parts that fit a Toyota ? Seems to me just another waste of public money on bureaucrats who don't have anything better to do, they should stick to straightening bananas.
