You've probably seen the news that there's a campaign to get "Essex girl" removed from certain dictionaries. (Apparently it didn't make it until 2002.)

Officially the origin is 'unknown'.

Anyone know how/why the phrase grew through the 80s and 90s?

Discussing it here and can't really pin it down.

I've noticed that the increase in the number and size of furry dice definitely increases when you cross the Thames. I don't know whether this is the cause of, or the result of the image portrayed.

Don't know why it needs to be removed from the dictionary, it's not as if an Essex girl will ever read it

There doesn't appear to be anything definitive online as to a year of origin.

It was certainly common parlance when I left Primary school in 1989, though was a far more recent phrase in our vocabularies then Yuppie was.

Q. Why do Essex girls have one more brain cell than a cow?
A. So when you pull their tits, they don't shit on the floor.

All I can add is that the difference between Robert Maxwell and an Essex girl is that an Essex girl won't fall off your boat.

Essex man is an older phrase. It was used by political journalists to describe working class tories who voted for Margaret Thatcher from 1979 onwards. Essex girl is later and might have been invented by the Sun.

I was thinking along these lines. Thatcher's children and all that. Basildon being the epicentre.

What is the difference between an Essex girl and a KFC bargain bucket?

Once you've finished with the breasts you've got a greasy bucket to stick your bone in.
