England were too tired - Crouch

They had been going in well in practice - but we were fresh then

Crouch on England's penalty preparations
Liverpool striker Peter Crouch has blamed exhaustion for the dismal penalty shoot-out performance that ended England's World Cup campaign.
He said Wayne Rooney's sending off left the players too tired for the spot-kicks, which they lost 3-1.

"I honestly felt exhaustion set in at the end against Portugal," said Crouch, who was not one of the penalty-takers.

"We had played quite a lot of the game with 10 men and I think we took the penalties in a tired way."

England missed three of their four penalties after Saturday's quarter-final had finished scoreless.

The side had played for an hour with 10 men after Rooney's red card for a stamp on Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho.

Crouch's club team-mates Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, plus Frank Lampard, all failed to net from the spot in Gelsenkirchen. Owen Hargreaves was the only scorer.

"Everyone worked so hard and I genuinely feel everyone had given everything by the time we had to take the penalties. That definitely showed in the penalties we had to take," added Crouch.

Everyone of us felt we could go all the way this time

Peter Crouch
It was England's fifth defeat on penalties in a major competition in the past 16 years.

But Crouch, 25, who came on as a substitute after Rooney's dismissal, insisted England could have done no more to prepare for the penalties.

He said: "We have come in for criticism in the past for not practising penalties but I can assure you, we had been practising them all the time after going to Germany in early June - and before that.

"They had been going well in practice - but we were fresh then. We were in an empty stadium as well, which is a different ball game to Saturday.

"When it goes to penalties it is a lottery and we came unstuck again on Saturday. It was a bitter blow to go out of the World Cup the way we did and afterwards a few of the lads were inconsolable.

"Every one of us felt we could go all the way this time. We really felt we had the team to achieve that goal and it is such a shame it ended like it did."

Ithink our problem is we don't have enough shootouts in this country.

In most of Europe, their cup competitions are decided on the day. i.e. Extra time and penalties.

Here, we only have that in the League Cup where most big teams field weakened sides. FA Cup you get a replay first which usually decides the outcome before the need of extra time.

Plea to the FA. Give our top players a chance of taking them in big competitions so they can get used to taking them.

Have much reserves of energy do you need to run up and kick a ball hard.

Germany 4 penalty shoot outs 4 wins 17 scored 1 missed.

ALL ENGLAND PLAYERS ARE WANKERS.

They did this time! The Premiership finished a week early and Sven got all his wishes granted. This excuse should not be trotted out this time. We either weren't good enough or not managed to our full potential. Take your pick. Aside from this our most unfit player, came from La Liga

Dosen't seem to have affected Henry, Makelele, Ronaldo, Calvalio, Valente or Maniche much either.

I wasn't angry until i read that.

f*** OFF CROUCH, that is the worst excuse i've ever heard, you are professional footballers and should be able to play more than 60mins with 10 men and be able to take a penalty.

Missed my point entirely. I'm not going on about the tiredness at all.

I mean introduce extra time and penalties to the FA Cup.

No. You are the wanker. I enjoyed this board so much more without your ill thought out, reactionary and stupid comments. I was at the game on saturday and when it was all over I was proud of the effort those lads put in, despite the result.
Are we good at penalties? No. Are they all wankers? Don't be such a tit.

Ah f*** it. I just got back from a boozey lunch and am being overly aggressive. Sorry also.
But the fact is, those conditions were extreme, and regardless of how much you earn or how fit you may be, unless taking penalties is second nature you will struggle. As Yoda says, we are at a disadvantage and the problem lies more with the FA and the English preperation than the individual players.

Sorry, misread your post but the points the same. There are enough premiership players in the last 4 to say that its not the league to blame.

As for the extra time and penalties, I don't seem to remember Steven Gerrard having too much difficulty banging one in the FA Cup final.
