and nearly gone next ball... inside edge on to pad, loops up, Rabada's sprawling dive is in vain. Lucky.

Serious examination for the England openers...

There are some pretty dark foot holes developing already... obviously with all the rain around it is pretty MOIST under the surface.

Drinks, Day One, morning session

England 41-1 (15 overs)

Cook 23* Westley 1*

It has been a serious inspection for the openers... hopefully it will settle down a bit now.

Maharaj in for an early dip... cross breeze, plenty of bounce and maybe a bit of grip... could be interesting.

Westley finally plays an attacking shot after 27 balls - he straight drives a Morkel half-volley and it's his first boundary. He moves on to 6*

England 46-1 (20 overs)

Westley riding his luck... chasing a short and wide one from Olivier outside off... at least he slashed hard and it flew over the slips for 4... fortunate and a rather surprising shot just before lunch.

Lunch, Day One

England 67-1 (29 overs)

Cook 31*(81) Westley 19*(56)

Root will be pretty happy after winning the toss and batting... it's been a sporting morning, and losing just the hapless Jennings for 17 is a pretty steady start lead by the dogged Alastair Cook.

The most extraordinary thing is South Africa bowling 29 overs in two hours... amazing scenes. Then again, the ball hasn't left the square very often!

On the stroke of tea, Malan edges Morkel to 2nd slip... and England are 144-4 (56 overs)

Cook was caught by de Kock, off Maharaj for 46... a very good low tumbling catch in front of first slip
Westley was also caught by de Kock, off Rabada for 29... a regulation nick

3 wickets in the afternoon session.
